We continue with STEEL #36, in which Natasha Irons dons Steel armor for the first time.

Steel is searching the catacombs under Garden State Medical Center for the tentacle monster he encountered last issue, but all he finds are squatters. He apprehends them, but not before they unload twenty bullets point blank on his face.

Back home, Natasha's still grounded after the previous issue's shenanigans. White arrows to clarify panel reading order.

Steel doesn't call her up because he's just now waking up in the hospital after his fall. He's not in shape to fly, so he has to get home civilian-style:

I know the art doesn't make this clear, so to clarify: That's part of the Steel armor he's handing her.

Yes, "rosebud" actually works.

This issue also has a plotline about how John realizes there's nowhere on Earth he truly considers home. Certainly not his Jersey City pad. It's handled in a refreshingly subdued manner by superhero pathos standards. There's no room for it here, but it's what he's dealing with while all this is going on.

The issue ends with the reveal that, as will come as a surprise to no one, Dr. Villain has some connection to the tentacle monster.

Next time: We meet Skorpio, who becomes a recurring villain in the series, and we finally get some focus on Amanda Quick, John's friend who's responsible for bringing him to Jersey City in the first place. Also, there's a team-up with the Question.

Amanda Quick, huh? That's a character with a short shelf-life. She'd have to be turned into a speedster eventually.

God, I loved this run of Steel. It was the thing that pretty much put Steel into my top three favourite characters (second only to Superman, but higher than Daredevil).

Keep hoping DC'll get off their hineys and collect it. Wishful thinking. =/

I'm loving the characterizations and the tone, but it's Chris Priest--you EXPECT that. What's bothering me here is the art. I mean, really, I suppose there are people out there who have never seen a watermelon, but is it that hard to find visual reference? They SELL them at grocery stores, people. Christ, when he cuts it open, the flesh is swelling out like it's infected or pressurized or something.
