Why do comic fans get stereotyped so much?

A friend linked me to this yesterday, and I just had to share. Written and drawn by some guy who works in a comic book shop, Our Valued Customers is a webstrip in which he quotes actual things he's heard his customers say.

Some other stand-outs beneath the cut...

It's not so much, I think, that orgies cannot be consensual or that ladies should never get sexual, but that buying a female character-figure for the express and only purpose of shelf-fucking is less than savoury.

Buying a female character-figure because they are a neat character and then thinking "o hey, and they can DO IT with my other figures! lucky!"? Sure, unsketchy. Buying a representation of an established character just to be a sex decoration for already owned dude-toys.. sketchy.

I don't know if I'm in denial or just naive, but to be honest, I can't imagine anybody buying an action figure for the express and only purpose of shelf-fucking. It really does seem to me like the most likely explanation is that the guy was just making a harmless joke and people jumped to the worst possible conclusion.

Of course, I've been wrong plenty of times before, and I stubbornly keep expecting people to be good and sane when I really should know better, so there is that...
