..Iron Man: Rapture happens.

A four-issue mini written by Alex Irvine (Hellstorm MAX and some tie-in novels, and what's essentially Asimov fanfic) and drawn by Lan Medina (well, I suppose that look's been proven to work for Iron Man), it's What If Tony Went Cyberpunk Wholeheartedly?

It's paced in a novel way; while Irvine and the solicits've promised us a hell of forced mental uploads on Stark servers and some killer War Machine fights, the first issue is dedicated to Tony's transformation.

(It's as NSFW as half a page of a man performing waldo-assisted neurosurgery on himself is, for the record.)

..with his health taking a sudden nosedive.

Here, the cause is a 'massive coronary', which isn't totally surprising.

Lucky to be alive as he is, Tony further risks himself by refusing a transplant..

..because, you see..

..he'd rather build his own.

(Not hard to see which continuity Irvine's taking cues from here, isn't it?)

Pepper's confidence in Tony's ability to realize his limitations, however, is a bit shakier than it appears.

Tony assures her he won't get addicted to self-improvement, but as Rhodey discovers..

(Rather closer than I'd expect Tony to let him get, or Jim to go.)

Pepper isn't too enthused with what he's doing to himself, though.

(The way this scene flows, you'd expect the slap to be the other way around. Interesting reversal, there.)

But Tony promises her that it'll all be alright; when all's upped and graded, he'll still be:

Except, see those ominous skull-jacks? Well, when Tony discovers he's got a little brain damage as well..

.. and it just goes downhill from there.

Oughta be fun to see what the new Tony's gonna be doing over the next issues, though.

So far, I'm on the fence

What I disliked (most) about this issue was the fact that Pepper was just a 'girl friend'. But the art is good, and the story seems interesting enough, so I'll give an eye to the next issue.

The art is good, though. Very atmospheric.

Self-improvement through cybernetic replacement eh? Well, that's never gone wrong before has it?

An Iron Man/Doctor Who crossover would be kind of awesome.

Dunno, they were pretty happy with it.

Except the initial gold thing. An entire race, unable to feel the joy of bling.

I thought one of the best bites in the "Age of Steel" was

Rose: "They’re people?"
The Doctor: "They were. Until they had all their humanity taken away. It’s a living brain jammed into a cybernetic body with a heart of steel. All emotions removed."
Rose: "Why no emotion?"
The Doctor: "Because it hurts."

And mercifully the gold thing hasn't been referenced by the Lumic Cybermen and when/if the mainstream Cybermen return I expect them to have removed that weakness.

Oh, Tony.

That one was pretty good, with plenty of Transhumanist references and far-out concepts like a rave club for post-organic lifeforms placed at the bottom of the Ocean.

When it came out, I was kind of hoping the "Tony 2.0" here would replace regular Tony after Civil War.

It's very good, totally worth the buy. Tony steals Johnny Storm's car and uses it as camouflage.

While I don't agree with what Tony is doing, I think Pepper is overreacting just a bit.

Maybe it's some sort of "Tony has an addictive personality" thing. (Which never made that much sense to me.) Pepper knows how Tony can get on "new projects" and that wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't worried about the end product. Maybe Pepper is a Dr. Who fan.

Well, there is the alcoholism...

I meant more like what Wikipedia say:

An addictive personality refers to a particular set of personality traits that make an individual predisposed to addictions.

To me, that means even though Tony is addicted to alcohol, it does NOT mean he has the anti-social or self-esteem issues prevalent that would make him easily addicted to other things. While Tony has his share of hang-ups, I don't think he is "addicted" to being Iron Man.

Didn't someone just clone Rhodey a new body last year or something?

I thought Tony created the clone and Osborn took possession? Certainly, in the first issue of War Machine Bethany tells Rhodey the cyborg stuff is temporary, a year or so while they sort him out something more human.

Not that it matters, I'm pretty sure this comic is set in movie canon.

Except the Tin Woodsman didn't get that way intentionally - it was the end result of an angry witch and a helpful tinsmith. Anyway, he's perfectly happy with his new body, so really, he's the LAST person Tony should be talking to.
