We've seen them meet and get to know each other's style. We've seen them overcoming their petty jealousies. We've seen the classic teamup rut that they'd begun to fall into. It's 1979, just a couple months after that penultimate Owl story, and a guy named Frank Miller is just starting work at Marvel. (I am using the Chronology to track when everything was published btw.)

Spectacular Spider-man 26, vol 1. Writer: Bill Mantlo. Artists: Jim Mooney, Frank Springer. (5 and third pages from 17 pages of story.)

The Masked Marauder, if you remember, has 'opti-blasts' that made people temporarily blind. However, he has improved his blast, and now it's permanent. He got Spidey last issue, in Spec 25, then got away. Peter manages to escape the arriving cops, but he's in trouble and scared out of his mind that this is the way it's gonna be for the rest of his life.

Since it's Teamup Time, DD magically notices that the cops are after Spidey again.

When Daredevil shows up, Spider-man feels a tingle from his spidersense and leaps away--only to realize it was signaling danger of falling.

The "What gave me away" line would be reprised by Tom DeFalco's Darkdevil, years later.

The issue after was where Frank made his art debut. It looks solid, nothing too flashy. But the writing was great. I had to chop it up like a cuisinart to get all the bits I wanted to.

Spectacular Spider-man 27. Writer: Bill Mantlo. Artists: Frank Miller, Frank Springer. (5 and a half pages from a 17page story)

Matt has to help him with things..

Spider-man keeps panicking and missing..

And has a freakout.

Gosh, what would calm Spider-man down?

Yes, Matt's apartment. Maybe he was thinking of giving Pete a backrub! I always find those relaxing.

No clue what they did to occupy them in the intervening time. But they spent a long time there, because Daredevil apologizes for the time the Doc spent waiting..

I believe the blog Polite Dissent ripped the science apart here but I can't find it.

Spider-man freaks out again, about the Marauder on the loose.

Try up, Pete.

Overcome by emotion and vulnerability, Peter almost breaks out of his shell..

Daredevil holds Spider-man while they swing around the city awhile, waiting for Spider-man to start tingling. Nothing at all slashy bout that..

And there is more of this..

They finally find the Masked Marauder! Yay!

Aw, Matt.

There's fighting and posturing! The Marauder has a super-robot that he has turned into a 'bombdroid' to destroy the city! He himself planned to escape in a teleporter!

On to--Spectacular Spider-man 28! Writer: Bill Mantlo. Artists: Frank Miller, Frank Springer. (18page)

The bombdroid has taken off with blind Spider-man riding it! Daredevil is too late to stop the Marauder!

Using his spider-sense in a way he has never before, Spider-man has located the controls and ripped them out. To prevent the bombdroid from hitting people when it crashes, he must ride it down! And something interesting is happening.

You see, being resurrected like a spider has given Peter new spiderpowers, like enhanced senses--oh wait, wrong story. No, they don't bother explaining why spidersense, which might be conceivably like Matt's radar sense, would suddenly also give Peter enhanced senses.

The postscript is unbelievable. Why didn't Peter just go home? His apartment had been invaded by the villain Carrion in the meantime, but he didn't know about that.

And letting a blind guy into your apartment is one thing. Spider-man could see at this point, and there's no way he didn't know when he left that he'd been sleeping on Nelson and Murdock's couch. I believe by now Peter had abandoned his old theory about Matt being Daredevil.

Daredevil 160. Writer: Roger McKenzie. Artists: Frank Miller, Klaus Janson.

Frank Miller plots with his fellows to steal all of Spider-man's villains. Peter himself doesn't show up for a long time. But there's this cameo. This time, Matt is the one who envies.

Now THIS is interesting stuff. I like how Spidey doesn't play the stoic hero - he reacts like anyone would, i.e, he FREAKS OUT. He doesn't give up, but he's nowhere near at the top of his game - this is a huge adjustment for him to make, and no one tries to pretend otherwise.

I'm not sure it's even a matter of research - it's simple logic. One simply thinks 'OK - how would I react were I put in his situation?' If anyone says anything other than 'freaks out', they're either lying, exaggerating, or braver than most.
(Of course, Spidey HAD used his spider-sense to navigate at times when he couldn't see before all this, but those were just 'whoa, who turned out the lights?' situations - this is BLINDNESS. You can't expect him to act calmly and rationally.)

Oh, this is gorgeous. I don't think I've seen tenderness like that in a team-up before.

Which is very diplomatic indeed, what with 'oh God I'm blind I'd rather die than be blind they have such awful hair' coming from Peter every five minutes.

I remember reading this when it came out, but I haven't looked at it in ages. As you say, Miller hadn't really come into his style yet, but you can see glimpses of it -- like that shot of DD silhouetted against the shattered window.

So, when Spidey guest-starred in Daredevil, that led to John Romita taking over Spider-Man's book. And when DD guest-starred in a Spidey book, that resulted in Frank Miller taking over Daredevil. Nice bit of symmetry there.

Okay I really want to just reach out and give Peter in the first panel a hug. That's some serious (and understandable!) woobie right there.
