The first issue of The Traveler, the second of the three superhero books Stan Lee is doing with Boom! Studios, is now out. On this one, Lee's backed up by Mark Waid and Chad Hardin on writing and art respectively.

The promos described the concept of this book as the adventures of a time traveler who's perfectly willing to alter history. None of the non-interference stuff you usually see in time travel stories. One issue in and it looks like of the three books, this one diverges the most from the prototypical Stan Lee model for superhero stories. So far, the main character is still very much an enigma, which is not something I recall Lee ever doing. He always showed you all the cards right up front when it came to the protagonists, but here the question of just who the Traveler is looks to be a central mystery to the series.

This is the very first panel, and later events seem to point to it being some sort of clue.

"Time broken"? Hmmm.

This woman, whose name is Danielle, gets attacked by something called a Split-Second Man (a group who, curiously enough, was mentioned over in Soldier Zero as an enemy of the main character's suit's people), only to be saved by our hero.

Over the next few days, more people are targeted by the Split-Second Men, and the mysterious Traveler keeps showing up to save them. The targets are from all walks of life, with no apparent common element.

The story drops some more clues during his rescue of a bus driver.

So... theories?

Well, the badge on the suit looks like a ripped ID patch. Government project of some sort?

...I don't suppose he has a comrade whose badge reads "I RON BUTTERFLY"?

But then, with the badge-tearing that would make his name Ironbutt...

Tom Katers on Stan Lee
The guy is spitting out origins for characters like a machine gun. A lion tamer gets struck by an electrified whip and can talk to cats. A absent minded professor trips on magic stairs and can remember everything. Even things he never experienced. A professional hang glider crashes into a radioactive mist and can never touch the ground again. He can’t be stopped and we simply have to accept the fact that he can destroy us with his thoughts.

Stan Lee tends to put me in mind of a comment that G K Chesterton made about Charles Dickens:

One of the godlike things about Dickens is his quantity, his quantity as such, the enormous output, the incredible fecundity of his invention, I have said a moment ago that not one of us could have invented Mr. Guppy (a minor character from 'Bleak House', for those who don't know). But even if we could have stolen Mr. Guppy from Dickens we have still to confront the fact that Dickens would have been able to invent another quite inconceivable character to take his place. Perhaps we could have created Mr. Guppy; but the effort would certainly have exhausted us; we should be ever afterwards wheeled about in a bath-chair at Bournemouth.

On a tangent, have you ever seen the award-winning BBC Bleak House adapation? It's startling how much the actor they got for Guppy resembled the original illustration.

Time distorts around a dense enough gravity well. His own powers may be warped beyond his control.

Hmm. He seems suprised by who he is and what he's wearing. Maybe he has no memory beyond his mission.

I'm going to bet that patch is either a corporate patch, OR, it identifies him as part of the military.

I think it's more that certain letters on his ID patch have worn off, and he hadn't realized it until just then.

Traveler is adorable and I love him so far. I was excited for this because it's supposed to take place in my (near) hometown of Richmond. And then they show that he gets pissed at people who are late and the book has amazing art. I'm sold! I can't wait to see where this goes.

I'm guessing that makes his first name 'Kiron' or 'Karon', but I wonder what that makes his last name? 'Crust'? 'Trust'? 'Dust'? 'Kiron Dust' would be a rather interesting name...
So this guy is sort of like the android Hourman, only human. OK, that's cool - android Hourman was nifty. Be interesting to see where this goes.

Oh, he's crazy, no doubt. Being late to an arbritrary promised time has nothing to do time-space continuity. But most of the time we see people either completely determined to preserve time or completely determined to twist it to their own benefit, so it's novel.

I'm going solely off of what I read here, but it seems like he's setting people up to change the future. So, like, girlfriend up top doesn't get to drive, and I'm thinking this guy's now going to be on time for something he otherwise would have been late for. Which is to say, maybe he's a liar instead of crazy.

The Traveler's the kind of hero I can get into. He's funny, and he values punctuality! Hooray! And also he's slightly adorkable, despite being a big muscley dude. XD
