I've always liked the theory that not only Perry knows, but most of the named Planet staff knows. But they all love Clark, and they respect Superman, so they know to leave it be.

I always put Perry in the same category as Jim Gordon: Both of them know, Bruce/Clark are pretty sure they know, but all pretend otherwise for plausible deniability reasons.

This. Perry was an investigative reporter before he was editor; Jim is the police commissioner. To say that they don't know is rather insulting to them.

Bruce and Clark haven't chosen to tell them (probably for plausible deniability) and they respect the heroes so they don't mention it.

They know, and just knowing is good enough for them - none of this running around trying to "unmask" them like Silver Age Lois liked to do. In fact I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Silver Age Perry put a stick in Lois' spokes once or twice to keep her from "proving" her theories.

I'm pretty sure Perry helped out with some of Superman's zany schemes to teach Lois a lesson a few times. The time they tricked Lois that she had travelled several decades into the future was one time, I think.

A secret, yes. Like Clark is not a useless goofball, and that his "mild-mannered" persona is an act to get people to underestimate him and open up more than they should in interviews.

Yea, but he's also going to notice the timing of Clark's excuses and disappearances. Suspicion adds up, you know?

I think it would depend on the person.

Luthor, for example, in all his great ego, would just assume a man of Superman's power wouldn't come down to the "little people's" level with a secret identity.

But as others have mentioned above, Perry has worked with both Clark and Superman on numerous occasions. To make it seem like he DOESN'T know after all this time is selling him and his intelligence short.

My thinking has always been that it's like Jim Gordon. Technically, he doesn't know...but it's because he CHOOSES not to know. On one level, he's practically certain to know or at least reasonably believe. But on a different level, he doesn't "KNOW", so he acts as if he doesn't actually have any idea.

Like Jim Gordon, he knows it benefits everyone if he doesn't know and there's little benefit if he does.

Hmm. I wasn't aware that Perry was back on the cigars again. Not that I'm complaining - he's arguably one of the most iconic cigar smokers in comics, alongside J. Jonah Jameson and Nick Fury - but I thought his having quit smoking had been emphasized for a while.

but I thought his having quit smoking had been emphasized for a while

...Especially since Perry had cancer. Clark had to fill in as editor for a while when Perry was getting treatment. The cancer went into remission and Perry returned to work, but you'd think he'd stay away from the cigars.

Well, presumably he's cut down quite a bit - after all, you used to almost never see him WITHOUT a cigar. Maybe he just saves them for when he's really, really stressed or something.

Well, that's ridiculous - I mean, they look exactly like cigarettes, and they're made of candy! What else would you call them?

bariman: by perletwo (Default)

Well, you wouldn't want kids to think smoking is cool, or tastes like candy. One could always call them extruded sugar product.

Date: 2010-12-18 11:31 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex
Oh, I get the psychology of the situation, all right, but you'd think they'd just stop making them or start making them in a different shape. I mean, whether or not they're CALLED candy cigarettes, you know that what a lot of kids are going to do with them is pose with them like cigarettes and pretend they're smoking. If they do that with straws and so forth, you know damn well they're going to do it with something that looks exactly like a cigarette.

I read a fic once where someone on the Planet staff figured out who Clark Kent really was, and went to tell another staffer, only to get told basically this:

"Yeah, most of us have figured it out. But think about it. Why would Superman even HAVE a secret identity? Because he lives a very weird life, so he needs something to stay sane. So if you expose him, you take away the thing he uses to keep himself sane. Follow this logic chain a little further, and then shut up, new guy."

It was a pretty bad issue. Like the whole rather shifty implication that Superman is playing favorites with Daily Planet was just left there. Oh, as long as he's not sleeping with Lois it's okay to play favorites.
And Perry treated that kid like crap. "Why didn't you climb the roof and get a better picture?"
Gee, Perry I guess by the time I did that Superman would've flown away with his super-speed and all.

And Clark writing his own slice-of-life promo pieces... Yeah, I need to reconnect with humanity, but, I'm still so self-absorbed to write about myself. God, I hate "Grounded".
