One of the funniest things I've seen in awhile. Hipster Superheroes!

Greetings True Believers!

Did you ever see those pics of superheroes dressed up like hipsters? Well, they were funny. CollegeHumor.com found them funny enough to create a animated video about them. It had me rolling! Enjoy!

"Please. Hulk only smashing ironically."

Yes, Snake-Eyes approves.

It's a phonetic spelling of a swear.

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, to each their own. Wasn't bad, but I can't say I was exactly howling.

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don't really get the whole 'hipster' thing. In this, they seem to be defined as 'self-righteous slackers who dress in a slightly eccentric fashion', but from what I've heard, just about ANYONE can be declared a hipster. In fact, trying very hard NOT to be a hipster can be seen as hipsterish. Where will it all end? *shakes fist at sky*

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but 'poser' is a tricky definition, because where does 'I am genuinely enthusiastic about the things I care about, and wish to spread the love' become 'the things I DON'T like are obviously inferior, and the things I DO like will only remain that way as long as they pander to my interests'? There must be a grey area in between, but it's very difficult to discern.

The difference between poser and poseur perhaps?
salinea: (smug)

[personal profile] salinea 2011-01-27 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's French therefore per se charged with meanings of snobbishness and arrogance.

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Right. Makes sense. What does it mean, though?
salinea: (Default)

[personal profile] salinea 2011-01-27 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
huh, hard to define. Someone who likes posturing about who they are and the things they like in order to appeal more cool and distinguished and look down on other people, kinda?

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically, if 'posers' HAS any sort of French root, that's it.
salinea: (Default)

[personal profile] salinea 2011-01-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poseur

The term coined from the French verb "poser" in the 1870s, to refer to people who "affect an attitude or pose"; earlier versions of the verb in Old French meant "to put or place". Etymonline, an online etymology dictionary, argues that since the "word is Eng.[English] poser in Fr.[French] garb", thus it "could itself be considered an affectation."[2]

Dictionary.com says the word refers to "a person who habitually pretends to be something he is not."[1] The Merriam-Webster dictionary notes that the term was also used to refer to a "person who pretends to be what he or she is not" or an "insincere person".[3] The Encarta dictionary states that the term is used to describe a "pretentious person" or "somebody who tries to impress others by behaving in an affected way".[4] The Cambridge Dictionary defines a "poseur" as "someone who pretends to be something they are not, or to have qualities that they do not have."[5]

Many individuals misspell the word as Poser, which by Merriam-Webster's definition is either "a puzzling or baffling question" or "a person who poses" as if for a portrait.

It's a common misspelling of poseur.

[personal profile] psychopathicus_rex 2011-01-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
So 'poseurs' is, in fact, NOT an affectation; it's just being accurate, but everyone will think it is, because it sounds more French.
...
Oy.

They forgot the bit about how the fixed-gear hipster rides around carrying his coffee in an open Mason jar so anyone within range is in danger of getting it spilled on them.

Hipster is someone who likes something you hate or hates something you like and dresses different from you.

There is a more accurate definition but that seems to be how people use it NOW.
thehefner: (Default)

[personal profile] thehefner 2011-01-27 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that they like something you hate. It's that they look down on whatever you like, and if you like something THEY like, then they'll hate that thing too. The minute a band they love becomes popular, it's dead to them.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why my working definition of hipster is "trying too hard". Admittedly, I have-- fat ass notwithstanding-- never been particularly hip or cool, so take it as you will.

Didn't Morrison have Professor X actually doing something like that, telepathically reading the mind of an author as they were writing, so he got all the original ORIGINAL ideas?

You know what? I live in Portland, I drink microbrews, I have a distinctive hat (ACTUALLY distinctive, not that goddamn same narrow-brim fedora they're selling in fifty colors all of a sudden), I drive an antique car that's always in need of repair, I get all my clothes second-hand or online, I've got a small magazine I edit, and the indie film I wrote just got produced and is currently looking for distribution.

I AM A HIPSTER. There, I said it. I am the label everyone only ever applies to others. I am the thing nobody can ever admit to being. I am the Untrue Scotsman. It's me, okay? ME.

It wouldn't bother me so much, but the basic hipster joke is the same one that once bore the names of emos, goths, ravers, grunge kids, yuppies, yippies, hippies, party kids, mods, greasers, JDs, teddy boys, beatniks, and so on back to fucking flappers. It's always the same: "You're expressing your individuality by acting and dressing just like everyone else in the subgroup you deny being part of! Tee hee! That gets funnier every time!"

No offense intended to the original poster. I've just been kind of inundated with that joke (originally written by Vandal Savage about Goths) lately, and needed to get this off my chest.

That is the CUTEST Spider-Man EVER.

And the Prof X thing has a point for pretty much anything creative. Rarely does what you have in your head translate entirely onto the page/easel/recording so that would be cool.
