I get what you mean. Personally, it's the specific deployment of stereotypes that I tend to have a problem with, not really the stereotypes themselves - at least, as long as they're not inherently MALICIOUS stereotypes. It used to be that you couldn't swing a cat in comics without hitting a few stereotypes, and while some of them are nasty pieces of work, those are largely perpetuated by people who were themselves nasty pieces of work - or just terribly ignorant about certain things. There were plenty of others, though, that were simply part of the common culture at the time, which included big-lipped black guys and lemon-skinned asians with buck teeth. One can hardly call that sort of thing enlightened, but there's a difference between unenlightened and actively malicious or bigoted - for instance, Jack Cole used to draw a gag character called 'Wun Cloo', a Charlie Chan knockoff who was about as stereotypical as you could get. His stories were still well-drawn and entertaining, though, and his race was never a source of humor in and of itself, so when I see a Wun Cloo strip floating around the 'net, I read it, 'cause I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it. One has to cherry-pick a bit, or one might as well avoid older comics altogether.
