All right. This book wasn't ever Jossed, afaik. There are a couple lines that later canon makes clumsy, for some reason Luke can swim though Leia can't, and Luke and Leia are pretty clearly attracted to each other, but otherwise it slots into canon decently.
...Here's a sample I removed the background from in Aviary.
It makes sense when you consider Luke's istory. He's the hick moisture farmer from Tattooine. All he's ever had to look at desert, sand and more desert, with an option of rocks if he's lucky.
Once he was on a world with water in abundance I can imagine him being obsessed with water as a feature of the natural enviroment, seas and rivers, oceans and waterfalls, and to Luke learning to swim (because you might need to KNOW how to swim) would seem like the coolest thing EVER.
Since that story was set after ESB, I suspect that her experiences in this one convinced her that she should learn ... and since anything she does, she does well ...
