salad_barbarian: The Tick! (The Tick!)
[personal profile] salad_barbarian posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Hard to believe it's been a year already eh? Last time things were a bit rushed and that caused a few problems when it came to nominating and voting. So this year there will be a lot more time between the various phases.
A nomination post will be made in both communities on March 11th and nominations will be accepted until March 24th. Voting will be from the 25th to the 30th. Voting will end on March 30th and the final award ceremony will take place on March 31st. I think this will give people plenty of time. We'll have a few reminder posts during the nominating and voting periods to make more people aware of the awards.

Right now I can use some help with a few things. Follow the cut to read what you can do to help:

-The Lifetime Achievement Award – An Award for a life time’s contribution to comics for those who have passed on or retired from comics.

Next up some volunteers to make sure that the nominations for this year were published after March 16 2010 (the date of the previous awards). If anyone knows of a reliable list of when various comics were published that would be very helpful. As well as no duplicate nominations (last year Plot Hole of The Year had Barbara Gordon's wards and Where the hell is Cass Cain which some people thought was too similar.)
If any artists out there would like to make some sort of banner we can use to make the posts stand out it would be appreciated!

Also last year there wasn't anywhere near as much activity on Noscans as there was on Scans. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get more participation on Noscans?

Finally some ideas about voting. Last year it was just me and sir_mikael counting each vote in each comment. It was a bit mind numbing. I know I can post polls on Live Journal but Dream Width requires a paid account to do that and I don't have one. Anyone with a paid account who's willing to help?

For legality:

and for the heck of it:

If you want to see the previous awards they can be viewed here at scans_daily and here at noscans_daily

Excellent. I'll have to review my collection thoroughly in the next few days.

And while I realize that this is a bit premature, but in light of recent tragic events, I think Lifetime Achievement should definitely go to Dwayne McDuffie.

It occurs to me the cutoff date will have an effect. Are the awards for 2010, or since the last awards?

Well, the last's gonna get a lot of Dwayne MacDuffie nominations, so I might as well start the flood.

Well, the other comment didn't exist when I hit the reply button. But I expect it's going to be a landslide regardless. Although I expect a few people (possibly me) are going to nominate Adrienne Roy for the spot, and MacDuffie next year. We'll see.

For categories, how about a graphic novel category? As in, its own story, not a trade collection of floppies.

Dunno if a webcomic category would be opening a can of worms or what. If it's too much, I'd leave it off altogether.

Hmm, problem I see there is webcomics is such a big field, a single award wouldn't do it justice. Since we seem more a community about print comics, maybe it'd be better to leave it.

[community profile] scans_daily is a paid comm; any member should be able to post polls here. At least, that's what the FAQ says.

You should be able to switch the account (from personal journal to the comm, and then click "switch") at the poll creator page, or start from the S_D profile page and click "post," and get poll options from there.

I'll try joining from a free account and see what settings it takes. (It'll take a while; S_D no longer has open membership.)

If it doesn't work, I'd be happy to donate a month of paid time so you could post a poll, or however many polls it takes.

I'd also be perfectly happy to post the poll.

And I'll send in a bug report, because the FAQ does say that paid comms allow free members to post polls.

Two suggestions:

- It might be helpful to state clearly the eligibility frame, i.e., anything published between {thisdate} and {thatdate} is eligible to be nominated.

- It might be a good idea to divide the fanservice category by gender: a Green Manties category and a White Bustier category, perhaps? Pitting Emma against Dick seems like comparing apples to oranges. So to speak.

But it would be SUCH fun to watch...

"YOU thought you could stop the White Queen with your hypnotic derriere, Grayson, but I'm now mentally downloading ALL the erotic fanfiction you appear in on the entire web into your brain!"

"Hah! But that must mean you've READ it! And as for me, I've LIVED most of it!"

Could we have a "Worst New Costume" category? 'Cause honestly, I think there'd be a lot more contenders for that than for good new costumes.

Poor Uncle Ben.

By the way, how does this work, exactly? Anywhere I can look at an overview?

A Life Less Ordinary – The positive portrayal of LGBTQ, differently abled, non-majority ethnicities and cultures

I think this should be broken down into at least three different categories: LGBTQ specific, non-majority ethnicities and cultures, as well as those who might be differently abled. I don't think they should all be lumped together as one.

Hmm. I actually kind of like positive, but best could also work. I like positive as it seems more... inclusive? I think is possibly the word I'm looking for here...
You could add to the differently abled category as also being a positive portrayal of a character who is either differently abled or developmentally handicapped (frex, Cass Cain would be -- she has learning difficulties -- reading, writing, speaking)
