(wow, back to back. That's lucky!)

And it's one where mutants are on the run, rather than the rise.

Those who live outside the force walls face more than humanity's Exonim (clever) legions and anti-mutant legislation; they face the government's elite mutant hunters.

Four men and two women, each with their own motivations to see mutant freedoms leashed.

Six very familiar faces broken by their world, they are what they are: the Avengers.

(After the Phoenix's blowup, no point in guessing what they're Avenging.. though I can see why someone suggested Freedom Force, instead. With a Ms. Marvel, even.)

And their story's to be told in the two-shot Age of X: Universe, whose first hasn't had the warmest critical reception. But that's to be expected, when it's a two-issue tie-in to an alternate reality event.

I liked this week's first enough to be awaiting April's second, though: Simon Spurrier's definitely had fun playing with established characters in a universe really foreign to them.

The Avengers story opens present-day, with Legacy ruminating on "playin' hero."

In doing so, she evidently flashes back to about one thousand days ago, in the Grand Canyon Genetic Exclusion Zone.

To the apparent memories of one Steve Rogers, which suggests a TPK next issue. (Which half the readers probably want/were expecting anyway.)

This is the team's first mission, quelling a riot of some fairly familiar faces, so of course Captain Steve (love the people who thought it would be John Walker or even Bucky, because oh no not Steve!) monologues about his fellow "specialists."

Starting with a man who's dead inside and outside, who just VAKOW'd Maggott for Steve:

(The line could or couldn't be "didn't have.")

And yes, that's the Blob, who's shortly moved by the green, mean, nasty, Hulking, and fucked up Bruce.

There's Jessica "Redback" Drew, the mute killer; Susan Storm, whom some interestingly consider having an odd case of White Man's Burden re: mutants, and a flaming fellow named Johnny:

(I would guess doing angry donuts in the burned-out remains of Albany, Steve.)

Unfortunately for Johnny, he gazes into the mouth of Chamber. Who blows him up good, boosts his hell-cycle, and runs with it and everyone else.

(I wonder if that means he'll be getting an angry call from Mephisto soon.)

That knocks the roster down to five, makes their first a failure, and gets them one very quiet and intense debriefing from..

.. not Fury, not Gyrich, not even Ross.. but General Frank Castle.

Did not expect that; I figured Spurrier's promised Punisher cameo would be something like 'third Exonim pilot from the right, Frank' or 'grizzled Sergeant Castle.'

It's a hell of a world where Frank can rise this far, where Doctor Banner is quick to lash out, and where Sue has motivations like this:

"Her husband didn't agree. But Sue had some fond memories of that couch."

(Wonder what's happened to Franklin in the wake of that? I expect #2 might touch on that.)

General Castle gives them their next mission's briefing: intelligence's picked up on the construction of a certain mutant sanctuary.

It's their job to bring it down, but first they have to get there. Luckily, there's an asset that can find it for them: a leashed, prosthetic-jawed long-haired tracker broken enough to only mumble about "[smelling] you, bub.. [tasting] yer stink.."

While that Weapon-S leads them to the foundations of Fortress X, the Avengers have it out with each other; their tensions culminate in Bruce delivering his origins by rant.

(Gamma weapon, accidental detonation, beast within unleashed: just add mutants!)

And then the place is found.

Bruce hulks out in anticipation of mutant butchering, and Tony calls it in:

(Mutants scar you like woah, man. Like woah.)

And so we close on a kill-order that's almost certainly not going to succeed, with the next issue promising moral conflicts (nice to know they aren't total "psychotic hatemongers") and sporting the cover homage it pretty much had to:

Definite TPK then, with Cap's probable attempt to restrain the bloodthirstier ones getting him an absorbing from Legacy? We'll see..

Not to worry, though, everyone's not a dick in this universe. Spidey in the backup's still a good guy.

In a world where anti-mutant hysteria's led to suspicion of anyone with powers (what first got that kicked off? Nick Fury's Secret Warriors, of all people) and DNA scans marking anyone who isn't baseline human, Pete and his pregnant wife are at risk.

So when the government preempts their joint escape, there's only one thing he can do:

Like I said, bit rote, but.. fuck if it doesn't work.

Plus, it's better than what he got in AoA.

If he's not dead, I can hold out hope thar someday, he'll get a nice good writer and everything will turn around and be wonderful. If he's dead then he's dead.

If he's dead then he's dead.

Like Jason Todd! Or Bucky Barnes! Or half of comic book characters ever!
