.... i really hope that wink is DC telling us, "Don't Worry, we know they will end up together. They ALWAYS end up together...."

No, i don't care what you say, THAT is what I am going to believe. Lois and Clark are meant for eachother, they will ALWAYS find a way back to each other!

Even Morrison believes that (too bad he is doing Young Clark :( )

I think it's fair to say that. I mean, Lois has been Clark's romantic foil from the very beginning (even though when you read those old stories it really feels like Superman's just trying to get with Lois as Clark for the lolz), so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they at least start dating at some point in the next few years.

Post-reboot, I would frankly be astonished if Lois and Clark didn't eventually end up together at some point; they're probably one of the most well-known romantic pairings in all of fiction.

Frankly, that prospect's what calmed me down after my... less-than-enthusiastic response to the news, shall we say.

God help comics if I were to become an editor. I think I would go nuts for a month just to see if the power of the collective screams of angry and sorrowful fans could be harnessed for evil purposes.

Question: "The American Way." Didn't they recently ditch that so that Clark stood for humanity and not just America? Heck, I thought that he even renounced his American citizenship?

Well, yeah. Did anyone actually believe DCnU Lois and Clark wouldn't be together eventually? Even Lana-centric Smallville eventually wised up and realised that the Superman story has lone ago come to be about Clark and Lois, not just Clark. Just because they've decided to backtrack and take a different road doesn't mean the destination has changed.

On other Superman-related news, has anyone else read about Lawrence Fishburne being cast as Perry White in the upcoming Superman movie? I can't help but think they should have done this in Smallville, just for the Matrix jokes when Clark was wearing his SuperNeo outfit.

Superman winking to the reader in the final panel was already a tradition long before "Whatever Happened." It just fell out of favor for a while when Byrne rebooted things; I guess that sort of mild fourth-wall breaking was too much for his (overly) serious take on Superman.

Yeah...aside from the incredibly dull story and the assholic Superman, Grounded's big problem has been that it is a long meandering trip that just hits on the same themes that have been a part of Superman lore forever. We don't need a huge-ass story to tell us that Lois and Clark are in love. We've been getting that since 1938.

I have an Golden Age Batman story, and it had woman who was Bruce fiance, but it wasn't Vicki Vale or Selina, how come they're not the couple? I think the reboot might help the new generation to know better...

Well, this article, while discussing the new Zach Snyder Superman movie, give one interpretation:

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/06/pl_column_loislane/

But the answer I like is that Lois is the perfect match for Superman, because she's a Superwoman. She just doesn't have the Kryptonian physiology that gives her superpowers.

But then again, she doesn't need them.

Mind expanding that last part to more cynical readers, the people who see Lois as classic DiD (Damsel in DIstress) as she would get kidnapped, get herself in danger (like taking a close up shot of a ice dinosaur in the Fletcher cartoon), get easily bamboozled by SilverAge Superman, and getting hit in the head in Superman Returns...

Those people either don't know or forget Golden Age Lois and modern Lois. Golden Age Lois could be a shrew to Clark, but she was intelligent, independent, and feisty. But Modern Lois puts herself in danger to follow the story. Look up Superman: Birthright. It mostly gets posted here because of its interpretation of young Lex, or because people find Lienel Francis Yu's Clark so manpretty, but Birthright's Lois is almost pitch perfect. Clark falls for her immediately not because he thinks she beautiful, but because she stands up to a jerkass editor on behalf of a co-worker. Lois is headstrong and wild, but she is a genuinely cares about people, and could be a comic book hero in her own right, because she is, it's just she happens to exist in a world of flying people and aliens and magic, so her crusading journalism is kind of overshadowed.

Golden Age Lois was a firecracker, until the editors demanded that they make her 'pretty' and less independent or sexy. To Wit:

"Murray and I have gone over the magazine stuff, and we find that a great deal hasn’t been done to make Lois look better. The roly-poly hair-do is still the same way we complained about, and why is it necessary to shade Lois’ breasts and the underside of her hair with vertical pen-lines we can’t understand. She looks pregnant. Murray [presumably Murray Boltinoff, longtime DC staffer - BC] suggests that you arrange for her to have an abortion or the baby and get it over with so that her figure can return to something a little more like the tasty dish she is supposed to be. She is much too stocky and much, MUCH too unpleasantly sexy. Please call it to the attention of Joe and his lads that the better artists in this field draw their heroines more or less by a certain formula that makes them look desirable and cute. This they do by having the hair prettily done instead of making it look like a rat’s nest. On top of this they make the face pretty – and they try to draw it in the same way every time. Then, by drawing the shoulders wider than the hips they give the girl a lisesome quality that is absent when the accent is on hips. Also, the waistline is drawn higher thant it would be in real life, and the legs are longer and slimmer. There is usually no attempt to prove pictorially that the female tummy has a certain roundness if not confinded within a girdle, nor that bosoms cast teriffic shadows by virtue of their outstanding quality. While the dames in SMILIN’ JACK may be very tasty and exciting, I certainly do not approve of them for exploitation in publications like ours. You know as well as I do what sort of censure we are always up against, and how careful we must be.

Since writing the first page of this, Mr. Jack Liebowitz has seen the artwork in question, and is extremely dissatisfied with Lois. He says that in addition to making Lois look like a witch, you have apparently dressed her out of a Montgomery Ward catalogue. He suggests Vogue, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar as likelier spots for dress-research."

Bronze age Lois wasn't a damsel in distress, either. In the mid 70s, she was more or less Emma Peel in the body of Mary Richards. Actually, she had some good silver age moments, too, but those were balanced out by times when she was just a horrible person, even given that she and Superman had a sado-masochistic way of flirting with each other.

the classic DiD is kidnapped because she's an easy target. Lois is more like a hostage. She goes where the bad guy is because that's where the story is and the villain pulls a gun on her.

Because of the difference of the core of their characters.

Batman is the core persona. Bruce Wayne is an outfit he sometimes wears. He's defined by being the badass vigilante.

Meanwhile, the core of Superman's persona is Clark Kent. His "humanity" is what defines him.

You weren't around in 1986. Byrne's revamp was extreme:

Invulnerability worked differently.
Clark's parents were alive.
Krypton was a dystopia with wholly alien cultural values instead of a high-tech version of modern America.
Lana's backstory was heavily changed.
Clark's personality as a youth was more callow.

Some of it worked pretty well in the end, but it was a shock at the time.
