I have to imagine that it's going to be part of the second wave or whatever of titles. I just hope they get a kick-ass creative team on them that'll do them justice.

It is really ridiculous that given the big play the Shazam kids are getting here (I think this and Underworld Unleashed are the only "big" crossovers where the Marvel Family have been front and center since DC has owned them) that there is NO Shazam series coming out in September. What better time would there be? What other major DC franchise could actually BENEFIT so much from this reboot?

And yet we're going to get Dan Didio's OMAC and a Blackhawks series (without Lady Blackhawk in it). I don't get it.

I don't get it either! I really hope it's just a matter of doing it with the right creative team and with the time to do it well and it's not DC just throwing these bits of goodness in our faces and then taking them away.

Motto. I mean, this is one of the few really good ideas in Flashpoint. It's a really fun take on the whole idea of Captain Marvel and is an idea that virtually begs for it's own series.

I mean: it's family friendly; it's got plug-in story potential; it's makes Captain Marvel a truly unique concept that doesn't come off as a direct variation of Superman....if it doesn't see it's own title, it's a missed opportunity.

Date: 2011-08-04 07:19 am (UTC)

Well, to be fair, the concept of the Marvel family here is completely different from the one in the regular DCU, so I don't really see the connection.

Also, I believe one of the solicits for Blackhawks mentions a Lady Blackhawk.

I'm pretty sure she's been explicitly stated as being Asian by DC, Chinese specifically I believe. A bunch of folks on the internet got angry at that given she's "Asian" but doesn't look it because of her powers.

Ryan Choi is ethnic Chinese. He was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong and emigrated to America. One of his story arcs had him returning home to save his former fiancée of an arranged marriage, iirc.

But when Death stops over for a chat, actually listen to what she is saying, don't just interpret what she says to mean what you want.

Element Woman is officially my new favorite character. :D

This might get me flogged, but I'm REALLY enjoying this event--I mean, some of the tie-ins are crap, but the main stuff has been really solid. I just hope the next issue can wrap it all up--seems really hard to believe that the whole Flash/Reverse Flash/saving the world thing can be explained and accomplished in just one issue.

When written right that's how it should be. Billy is the Sir Galahad of the DC Universe (as I read it) - the purest of heart and of nobility and incorruptible. There's a reason the Wizard chose him over all the other billions of people in the world. Billy Batson (in his Billy form not Captain Marvel) was also probably the most heroic character (outside of Superman) in Grant Morrison's Final Crisis: Superman Beyond mini-series as well.

I'm actually stunned Geoff Johns, who previously treated Billy as basically Black Adam's Water Boy has written him so well. Although it does point out the flaws in Didio & Winick's decision to ditch Billy in favor of Freddy in "Trials of Shazam". I still don't get why. They even gave Freddy the same look and uniform as Billy for goodness sake.

well too a point... you have to realiz sir galahad was ANNOYINGLY pure... I mean Lancelt was also annoyingly pure (save for the whole Guenevier thing) he was the BEST at everything... and when Galahad came around, he was even BETTER than Lancelot, at LEAST lancelot had one flaw... Galahad had none. Actually galahad's flaw WAS his purity, he was so pure he came off as detached from the world, and only really cared about spiritual perfection. This lead to him allowing people to die because to help them would be a distraction from his quest.... (a semseter of studying arthurian myth and being constantly bombarded with the perfection of Lancelot and THEN the perfection of Galahad... Galahad made want to read more about Lancelot because then atleast Lancelot had flaws...)

the thing with Billy... is that he can't remain the naive child forever... if you keep him as Galahad for too long, then runs the risk of becoming an ACTUAL Galahad... in other words... he would become more like the Wizard or the Guardians, detached and "Too good"

BUT the way the powers of Shazam work HERE, i think THAT is far more workable. Billy as not so much an innocent... but a person with a good heart. purer than maybe superman's, maybe. but i don't think its a pure heart not because of his innocence. but despite of everything he has faced he still has faith that there is good in the world, and good in people.

Good points. If I had to reboot the Marvels (which they are obviously) my out on why they just don't stay in their Shazam-ed forms 24/7 would be because the long they (Billy, Mary, Freddy) are power-ed up the MORE pure and out of touch with humanity they would get. Billy would be made the perfect choice by the Wizard because of all the people in the world he could maintain the perfect balance between human boy with a pure heart who WOULDN'T turn into an incorruptible would-be god.They would Black Adam, who (under some writers) looked down on humans (and his own people) like he was some paternalistic god instead of formerly coming from the ranks of ordinary men.

The other three are new characters. Each kid has one of the powers of SHAZAM, and if they all shout together they summon Captain...Thunder. To break it down, as told in the bonus pages in the back of the issue:

Billy=Courage of Achilles
Mary=Stamina of Atlas
Freddie=Power of Zeus

New girl is Darla Dudley, with the Speed of Mercury,
Boy with the glasses is Eugene Choi, with the Wisdom of Solomon,
and boy with the pet tiger is Pedro Peña, with the Strength of Hercules.

The Marvel Family concept would adapt VERY well in animated form especially (and I don't mean the cheesy 70s version) even better than it would in comic form where DC's target audience are middle aged males. But I could say the same about Wonder Woman. Instead DC Entertainment is giving up more Batman, Superman and Green Lantern.

Like the meta bit about "this is all just going to get wiped away." Very much the Morrison Animal Man run (and Seven Soldiers Zatanna mini). People living, suffering, dying, just for an unseen audience's amusement.

I always get that weird twinge of guilt when a meta writer points out if they write very well-developed characters, you begin to question effectively torturing them just for an escapist fantasy. But then I try and give happy endings, good over evil, from time to time.
