Meet the DC Fifty-Too!

Some of you have already come across a fun new blogspot, which offers and ALTERNATIVE new titles from DC which they would like to see..

Welcome to the DC Fifty-Too, a blog curated by cartoonist Jon Morris.

First up, more Katie Cook cuteness

I already want to see this is a mini-series!

Then, a relaunch of a Jack Kirby classic character by Robert Wilson IV

Why yes, he is a cute blond heroic type who goes around in nothing more than cropped jeans and accompanied by a 7-foot tiger man.... Wanna make something of it?

Let me say here and now that I LOVE that Robin costume... designed by Tim Seeley (current writer of Witchblade)

And this looks like it could be oodles of fun too, from Mike Horton (And I want the guy on the right's T shirt!

Mike says: Blue Beetle is my favorite DC character. Probably my favorite comic book character in general. I had a Ted Kord: Year One mini in development for like a week a few years ago and the cover concept for my Fifty Two cover comes from an pitch I had in with J. Torres around 2004 or so. The idea being that Dan Garrett's long lost grandson would claim the Blue Beetle legacy. The original pitch called for him to be trained by Booster and Beetle in a "My Two Dads" situation. Since then, Ted died and Booster became a full on time traveller. Jaime Reyes was also introduced and I loved him. So I just retooled the idea to make for a team-up type story. The talented Zac Atkinson (www.evilbyme.com) colored it for me. I hope you like it!

I strongly urge you to visit the Fifty-Too site, as there are many more samples in there from different genres (WWII Liberty Belle headlining her own series for one) and given it's only a week old I'm sure there's more goodness to come! :)

And for legality, from the most recent and final JLA, Dick and Donna discuss their JLA adventures, with Dick seeming to be channelling James Robinson, and Donna perhaps explaining her absence in the new DCU. Though I'm not sure what's up with her face there, it doesn't look much like how I think of Donna.

If I read the rules right, it's not considered a personal attack to call someone out when you think their attitude is problematic.

I didn't mean fifthie really, more turtlefu, which didn't call icon out on his attitude so much as his basic reasoning and the way he interpreted/reasoned with comics. It may not have even been a personal attack then, but personally it seemed unecessary to call him out on it at all.

'Calling someone out' is just another way of saying calling someone racist, in this case. Which is very much a personal attack in my eyes, and I dare say most other peoples'. Or do you disagree?

(frozen comment) Mod Note

[personal profile] salinea 2011-08-21 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The mod team and the [community profile] scans_daily policy disagrees. Calling someone a racist is not the greatest crime that can be committed in words, and even if it were - pointing out that things people do or say are silencing or pandering to a privileged majority is not 'calling someone a racist'. It is definitively acceptable to point out that a comment supports or may support institutionalised racism whether it is explicitly or implicitly. It is absolutely acceptable to discuss such matters with other commenters. Not every conversation about depiction of race is a competition to see who can be crowned Monarch of RIghteousness - most are good faith debates designed to make the subject of race in fiction more easily comprehensible. When you start whining about who's calling who a racist, you get in the way and set everybody back.

And this is the reason I was so against that particular policy. In it's current form it is not used as intended, just as means of pushing peoples' personal vendettas, or just an excuse to vent their unrelated anger on some anonymous person on the internet.

Seriously, are you saying that what Icon, and the people who have agreed with him, is somehow counter to the ideals of Scans_Daily? And while you might not consider it a "greatest crime" to call someone a racist, when they're patently not, it is still personal attack that hasn't got anything to do with actually discussing issues. Calling names is not discussion. This could all be prevented by simple hands off, report and let the mods make the decision approach that I've seen used elsewhere.

Or could it be that the very thin veil of fifthie's comments is really that obscuring? If so, then there's not much we can come into agreement. I guess. That's been my experience before, if there's an iota of uncertainty no one will change their initial interpretation of the issues on the internet. I'm no exception either, so... Eh.

(frozen comment) Mod Warning

[personal profile] salinea 2011-08-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me repeat myself. Pointing out systematic racist patterns is not considered a personal attack on [community profile] scans_daily. [personal profile] icon_uk was never called a racist, either. Moreover, saying that pointing out racist patterns in someone's behaviour is a personal attack consists a silencing tactic against anti-racism. As such it is not welcome here.

Since you've just ignored a Mod Note by using such a silencing tactic; you've just received your FIRST OFFICIAL WARNING. Please note that if you receive two further warnings you will lose the ability to post on this community.

So Batman is a sidekick? http://www.recalledcomics.com/AllStarBatmanAndRobin10RecalledCoverSml.jpg

In fact, sidekicks generally go in the front. A quick google search for "Batman Robin Cover" shows that Robin is almost always in the front. So yes, this cover shows the white kid as the sidekick to the ethnic character (which would be nice for a change, wouldn't it?).

Now did you really need to resort to personal attacks?

Not everything is automatically designed to rub sand into your eyes, you know? You can have a white character in the book without it being some kind of weird patriarchy white privilege conspiracy designed to oppress the poor hispanic kid that usually looks just as white as his partner, there.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] runespoor 2011-08-20 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you disagree with the interpretation, but the fact, the most eye-catching thing on that cover is a white kid, who is a new character specifically introduced in one of the comics where the main character is not white.

There is nothing wrong with calling that out, and you are way more out of line than Turtlefu. So kindly dial it back.

just going by the cover, and not the blurb below it, that doesn't look like a kid to me. I figured it was a Ted Kord set at the average age of superheroes(mid-20's IMO) without the gut and all they stuck him with. It is his ship, his goggles, his shirt and I'm pretty sure he has brown hair.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] jlbarnett 2011-08-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)

...isn't it more that the most eye-catching thing on the cover is a fan character that does not actually exist in the comics, being introduced in a comic which is not actually being made?

This isn't a book on the market. This is someone's character. And it just seems like he wants his character to play with Jaime.

Not everything is designed to rub sand in eyes, but exaggerated fanciful sentences about the Phantom Privilege almost certainly are. You can disagree with a commenter's observation without taking it to petty prose about how they are wrong and daft to think what they think. In future, please do so.

No, I agree with icon. This looks more like them introducing a new character to an established hero. A sidekick. Jamie isn't in his shadow, or grinning like an idiot, he looks serious and more powerful, and even in one picture exhibits a far more reasonable attitude. Also the new guy just looks like a sidekick. Jeans, shoes, a shirt, a jacket and goggles. Not really looking the hero part.

Throwing in my two cents' worth: it DOES look like the Dan Garrett grandson is rushing headlong into danger while Jaime looks just about ready to do a facepalm.

So Jaime is acting as the established and more experienced mentor that's trying to break in the newbie.

And note that it seems that The Scarab has decided to stay with Jaime and the new guy has to rely on Ted's hand-me-downs.
