She's feeling defensive for a variety of social reasons. Her reaction is fairly realistic - theres alot of defensiveness on both sides of the divide when it comes to interracial dating. White women for instance don't want to feel like status symbols or like they're a cut off part of their partners lives and that they can't really take part in everything their partner does (I recall an anecdote by Richard Pryors wife, where she was at a social get together with all black attendants, and the N word was being slung around alot and she foolishly let it tumble out of her lips and the room got quiet. Richard took her outside to gently talk to her.)
