Well, I think he was being facetious, there. Swap in 'tree-hugging' or whatever intentionally silly derogatory slang you'd prefer. And if you hadn't noticed, the 24 hour news channels misuse political labels all the time, especially when they talk to political pundits who can accuse an opponent of being a fascist, communist, liberal and socialist all in the same breath.
Agreed and it goes both ways. Conservative, Neocon, Tea Partier, Libertarian, Squirrels...
Many pundits have absolutely no political science background, many don't have twentieth century history down. I'd say of the conservatives, 25-50% started with the Reagan Revolution in colleges in the 80's and were even known then.
I can name one I'm sure of who does only because I took classes with him in college and was in political groups with, but he's definitely in the minority. There's was three others (two are dead) with solid knowledge bases ... that's it on that side.
For myself, I just take great umbrage to anyone, on either side, cheapening the term 'nazi' or 'fascist'. Having just finished reading 'In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin', I was reminded exactly how much people seem to forget about the Nazis and what they were really like.
I was agreeing with you. It makes me crazy how people throw around terms without the implications, and as I said how ignorant people are of twentieth century history.
(It does also crack me up that I knew some of these people, or at least of them, when they were 20.)
