Dramatis Personae. The Setup/Exposition. Rising Action/Complication. Conflict/Climax. Resolution. Denounement.

A major story arc for the Unwritten comes to a close.

Per the last issue....
Tom Taylor has finally destroyed the Cabal, and is now getting a rematch against Pullman at the bottom of the pit.

"The War of Words" ends...

As you can guess, Pullman is a fictional immortal. One of the oldest ones, where story superimposed itself on top of a mere mortal and came together.

Guess who?

A simple, humble farmer who only wanted to raise his crops, and was forced to sacrifice what was his to his brother and his newly "faith", based on the beliefs of a few. Well, this farmer did not take well to having what was his claimed and taken by those who believed in a made-up diety, and took his revenge.

And paid the price since.

Cain, of lore.
Suffering from 5,000 years of "telephone" and having his story told over and over again in so many ways, in so many languages. Each new generation adding to it, making him more the evil bastard over and over again.

Meanwhile, Tommy's friends come to the inner chamber in an attempt of a the rescue Tom from Pullman's plans. They find the inner chamber is not so easily breached.

Pullman explains his plan. Take the two beings who are Leviathan's most powerful creations/living stories (1st & oldest and the newest and most powerful), mix up elements of their stories within each other, and draw out Leviathan to come and fix it. Pullman now has the means to kill Leviathan. So that Pullman/Cain can finally die after 5,000 years.

His carrot to Tom? To be free of the beast and live and die as a man, or to live forever as Tommy Taylor (teenager, unable to curse or fuck, near sighted, etc.) as Pullman has for millenia.

Tom accepts.

With the ritual complete (both men had offerings at the alter), Leviathan comes.

And behold Pullman's plan to end his own life.
Use Tommy's direct link to Leviathan to channel that pain agony into it until the entity is no more, with both he and Tom dying from the effort.

Lizzie and Richie finally break through and thwart Pullman. Richie pulls the spear out from Tom, leaving Lizzie against Pullman. It does not go well.

Lizzie dissolves into mere words, and Pullman becomes ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
And Richie has to knock out Tom and carry him away as the place come crashing down on them.

Goodbye Liz.
Goodbye Pullman.

I'm dying to see where the story goes from here, with Tom hurt and Leviathan wounded.

Dammit, why did I spoil that for myself? I only just read Vol.5 of the trades. Fuck.

Oh well. If I'm lucky, I'll forget all about this when the trade comes out.
