...Okay, now Archie officially reeks of desperation, IMO.

Veronica: If you are Archie, then answer me this: Which one, hmm. Because the universe has been busy since you've been gone. These's more versions of you than there are planets in the sky. There's the retro ones, the manga styled one, the cartoon, the cartoon with supernatural stuff, the one from the Punisher crossover, the one you married me, the one you married Betty, which Archie are you?
Archie: All of them!
Veronica: Then you're... what? The truth behind the myth?
Archie: This one knows me, as I know her: the leech upon her father's purse.
Veronica: [pause] How did you end up on this rock?
Archie: The Disciples of the Light rose up against me and chained me in the pit for all eternity.
Veronica: When was this?
Archie: Before time.
Veronica: What does "Before time" mean?
Archie: Before time and light and space and matter. Before the calaclysm. Before this universe was created.
Veronica: That's impossible. No life could have existed back then.
Archie: Is that your religion?
Veronica: [pause] It's a belief.
Archie: You know nothing. All of you, so small.

Archie comics have been pretty good recently. Moves like the introduction of Kevin Keller have payed off well.

The best part of this whole thing's the big threat being an evil Dilton Doiley and a guy whose name I just realized is a Fred Mertz riff.

I must blind myself now, for nothing else I'd ever read could compare to the epic perfection of this post.

I prefer the Rule 63 Archie shown here to the other recent one.

I also notice a lack of the Archie from those weird Christian propganda comics.

Hey, maybe it will be revealed that Legion the Hippie is behind all the trouble.

Kevin, sure, that seems to have been done pretty well. Pretty much everything else after that just seems to me to be them going, "okay, what can we do now that will make news?"

In my imagination I decree this to be Transvestite Archie and not just a plain 63. I want to believe ok

The mainstream media talks about movies, televisions, and occasionally even books 24/7. If a wider variety of comics are getting mainstream press, I'm not seeing a problem. (So long as it's not yet another patronizing article called Bang! Zoom! Comics Aren't Just For Kids!! or yet another treatise about how Men Are From Mars And Dig Comics, But Chicks Just Like Flowers And Fluffy Bunnies From Venus.)

So long as there's no Dark Phoenix Archie, I'm happy.

Well, the whole point of Life With Archie is to play out all these what-ifs, imaginary tales, and alternate possibilities. So if they want to go balls out crazy multiverse that's fine.

This one image removed from context and taken on its own could seem a step too far. However, within the storyline, it was built up to over the past several issues in a methodical cumulative way, and follows everything else that's been shown by logical necessity. This is just the payoff at the end, and it works in its setting.

Not everything in the story works, admittedly. The multi-issue storyline is resolved WAY too quickly; you get the feeling Kupperberg was told "okay, this has dragged on too long, wrap it up this issue." Worse, this moment is the peak, and there's no real dramatic followup. Believe it or not, they were right on the verge of using all these parallel Archies to say something genuinely profound and touching about life and growing old! And then they fumbled the ball before getting it over the goal line. Didn't quite make it.

All I'm saying is, in context, this is a much stronger moment than you'd think.

Call it what you will, but I've been enjoying the stories.

I currently pick up *five* books from the company, more than my DC & marvel lists combined.

I don't see Archie 3000 in there...

But then, is that an AU, or just the future?
