Icon, as usual our tastes coincide!

Marvel Two-in-One is an under-appreciated gem of the 70s. It presents us with the Thing outside his normal context, but still the ever-lovin, blue-eyed Benjamin Grimm we all know and love.

Written, of course, by the equally under-appreciated Mark Gruenwald, who did so many great stories throughout the 70s and 80s. This highlights what used to be one of Marvel's greatest strengths...a solid continuity that made it feel like a connected, living world. And modern writers, take note: Gruenwald gives you two to three years worth of backstory in the space of three to four panels, here. A new reader can pick up what's going on here inside the story, in a matter of seconds.

Serpent Crown: evil artifact. check. Found by Avengers: check. Thrown into ocean and presumed lost: check. Somebody wants it to make himself powerful: check.

You don't need a huge text dump at the start of every issue and you don't need huge scenes of exposition....just enough to keep the story rolling. And what a great story it is, too.
