The Avengers vol 1 got pretty dire in the 90's - six months were spent on a plot about Russian Ninja Pirates vs. The Avengers vs. Russian superheroes vs. Alpha Flight vs some random Atlanteans which was mostly punching people, for example - but it did have some bright spots.

I was chugging through the whole massive bulk of the thing because I wanted to add all the 1990's issues of Avengers vol. 1 to my issue by issue guide to the Avengers, which I've been working on over the years to help fellow ficcers figure out if an issue is worth reading or not, when I came upon these little gems.

Steve doesn't believe "New Iron Man" isn't Tony
Tony has decided to pretend he is a "new" Iron Man, and the "old" one is dead. Steve doesn't believe him for a minute, and also, is pretty sure he's Tony. (Avengers 314)
She Hulk and Black Widow aren't buying it.
Black Widow knows exactly who he is and thinks the charade is ridiculous. (Avengers 332)Steve speechifies, Natasha laughs
Steve speechifies and Natasha laughs at him for it. (Avengers 343)
Hank's box o villains
Hank Pym (Ant Man / Giant Man / Yellow Jacket) comes to an Avengers meeting casually toting a box of shrunken villains along like a lunch box and doesn't get why anyone else is shocked. (Avengers 345)
Clint's inadequacy issues
Steve facepalms at Clint
Meanwhile, Hawkeye's insecurity leads him to take Pym's growing potion, causing Cap to say "I knew it was going to be one of those days" and quite literally facepalm. (Avengers 345)
Cap and Natasha's bff spar
Cap and Black Widow are so adorably BFF sparring together that the Vision angsts about his wee robot heart even more. (Avengers 367)

Natasha worries over Cap 1
Natasha worries over Cap 2
Also, apparently Natasha is a hurt/comfort fan. (Avengers 382)

Rage cupcakes Doom
But the best moment of all by far is when Rage, the Angry Black Superhero Avenger - no really, that's his power source and his origin story and his personality, I'm sure I'm not the only one headdesking at Marvel here - takes down Doom's plan with a cupcake. (Avengers 333)

Dire times?

No offense, but Avengers vs. Russian Ninja Pirates vs. Russian Heroes vs. Alpha Flight vs. Atlaneteans sounds pretty awesome.

I'm not sure Rage's eventual origin was always planned, but him acting childishly DOES have a certain logic to it if it was.

He turns into a super powered adult when he gets angry? So, he's like the love child of Captain Marvel and the Hulk.

Then Brian Bendis gave us Marvel's first Really Angry Self-Righteous Hot-Headed Black Guy by having Luke Cage join the Avengers. And when written by Benids, Luke Cage is *so* self-righteous I have a hard time understand what he means.

Bendis's Cage can be astonishingly well written. Cage just always puzzles me, no matter who is writing him. Cage says stuff and it sounds cool sometimes, but it never makes much sense.

Rage got better once he joined the New Warriors. Unfortunately, that's because they already had a Really Angry Self-Righteous Hot-Headed Black Guy (With A Skateboard), so Rage ended up looking calm by comparison.

This final issue of NIGHT THRASHER gives a very touching tearjerker moment with Thrash and Rage.

I've never read the series, but I've always liked how Kurt Busiek described its premise when he was writing it: "Batman and Robin, if Batman was a young black man and Robin was the Hulk."

Man, I would so be into this if the art wasn't so...meh. I know art doesn't make a good comic, but it helps. It isn't even that bad, it just fundamentally doesn't appeal to me. I dunno...

Also, the Vision is having an angst attack and not crying? For shame! The Vision is 70% tears!

"Man, I would so be into this if the art wasn't so...meh."

It also has one of the more awkward usages of the broke-back pose in that scene with Natasha being interrupted by Jarvis.

"An intruder! Must thrust my hips and use my secret weapons against it! *pose*"

If it weren't for his hilariously awful source and origin, Rage might be my favorite Marvel character for throwing a cupcake at Doctor Doom.

Also--Jesus, Nat, why don't you and Steve get a room already? :O

I'm starting to think Reed Richards' failsafe for Dr. Doom involves teleporting Squirrel Girl, Luke Cage with an I.O.U. and Rage with a cupcake, into Lataveria.

Honestly, this is a long way off from the Squirrel Girl/Doom fight. That was strictly played for laughs underdog (undersquirrel?) story. This is Rage realizing that Doom's portrayal of the situation can't be right because he's able to empathize with Doom. Basically, he's able to call Doom's bluff not because A: he's secretly a cosmic horror or B: LOL, SQUIRRELS, but because he's able to relate to Doom on a very human level. Which is something that's highly unusual in a Doctor Doom story and at once humanizes him and stresses the fact that, for Doom, being able to connect to people, as opposed to just understand and manipulate them, is a weakness.

That's pretty much the whole premise of the Big House.

Anyways it does make mad amount of sense; Think about it, the main problem with prisons is overcrowding. With this setup you can hold basically every criminal in the country in a facility the size of one normal prison.

In my rpg setting, I had the Big house situated in an outlet mall.

All you'd need would be one prisoner, just one, that had the ability to adapt to and neutralize any sort of externally-applied power or effect--like, say, Pym particles--and one very messy accident and countless lawsuits later (not to mention diplomatic incidents if any of the prisoners were heads of state and/or citizens of interstellar empires) you'd have to find another solution, if you could still afford to. It's not really any better of an idea than putting the crooks in the Negative Zone. (Slott had fun with it during his She-Hulk run, featuring a jailbreak that involved a teeny-tiny Mandrill crawling up a female guard's nose.)

Well, the reason I introduced the Big house was because I was doing my settings equivalent of the breakout, where every super prison on the planet had a sudden mass escape (Avengers: EMH had just premiered, and I wanted to do an adventure based on it.). And one of the PC's was a chaperone to the Avenger Academy kids when they visited (Its a long story.) and the breakout occurred.

I just figured out the only thing that could have improved the Avengers movie: about a solid minute of Natasha staring at Steve's ass and licking her lips. (She starts to rub her thighs together involuntarily before catching herself and rushing off to the ladies' room, where she runs into Maria Hill...)
