Yeah, the whole thing going on in Animal Man right now is that the avatar of the Rot is gaining too much power because the Green avatar is rejecting the role (or something) and the Red avatar is 5 years old. It's not that the Rot is bad, it's that it's taking too much power and throwing everything out of balance.

I feel like maybe I should be reading Swamp Thing, but I've never been able to get into it.

Alec understandably doesn't want to become Swamp Thing for real. That and he doesn't think the Green gaining power would be a good thing, citing the mindless brutality of plants in nature -- choking parasitic vines, weeds, etc.

So Alec doesn't get that his refusal is actually hurting things? I mean he's right about the plants, but that's why there's the Rot and the Red to hold them back.

I really like this mythology.

Well, that and Alec rather likes being human. The whole "turning into a plant elemental" thing isn't an easy decision to make. It is a selfish decision, but it's certainly an understandable one. Can anyone honestly say they wouldn't be at least somewhat reluctant to become a plant golem for the rest of their lives?

Oh yeah, I don't blame Alec for being a bit less than happy at the prospect of turning into a plant golem. That's a big life step no matter how you look at it.
