I doubt if it was a deliberate move, but I rather like the idea that the dirt poor farm kid from Tattooine really has NO sense of style beyond what he thinks looks fun and colourful, and if that's embarrassing to others, well sod them!

I like this idea as well, even if it is an impression that is given unintentionally. It makes sense for him to have no sense of style - I don't think they even made clothes in bright colors out in the boonies of Tatooine, so no wonder he'd pounce on them.
