And a good one at that IMHO...

Kid Eternity was an odd hero back in the day. A young kid, who spent most of his career without a name, killed before his time and, as compensation, returned to Earth as a ghost with the power to become solid if he chose and to summon up characters from the past (and fiction) to help him fight crime, simply be speaking the word "Eternity!" aloud (Like most other word-powered heroes he got gagged a LOT). He was accompanied by a jolly guardian angel type spirit called "Mr Keeper" who was the source of his power.

He had a brief return in the late 70's/early 80's in the lovely E Nelson Bridwell/Don Newton Captain Marvel series, where he was revealed at last, to have been Kit Freeman, the brother of Freddy Freeman, aka Captain Marvel Jr.

He didn't appear again until. post Crisis, Grant Morrison Vertigo-ed him in the early 90's as a rather odder character, an agent of the Lords of Chaos, ensuring that the Lords of Order never gain TOO much control in the Universe. He got a 16 issue series as a result.

He then faded away until he was brought into the Teen Titans during their "Every issue at least one Titan past or present dies gratuitously" phase. The less said about that the better IMHO.

So I was interested to see what the DCnU take on him was... and it's really rather interesting.....

Under the "National Comics" label comes this one-shot from Jeff Lemire and Cully Hamner

A year ago, 27 year old Chris Freeman died, albeit briefly. He and his father, a police detective, were victims of a drive-by shooting in the middle of one of their many arguments. For a few moments he was... somewhere else, a dark, in-between place, which seemed full of people, DEAD people, including his father. Christopher escapes the place, leaving his (clearly terrified) father behind.

Christopher isn't a people person like his dad was, he's not gregarious or sociable, which given his job isn't too surprising. He still works for the Police, like his dad, but he's a Medical Examiner. Which means he spends a lot of time with dead people, which he's fine with, but since his "death", well....

Eternity 001
Eternity 002
Eternity 003

And so the rest of the story follows with Christopher and the ghost of Darby (Which only Christopher can see and interact with) attempting to find out who killed him, and why, and that things are never quite what they see.

Christopher also meets a figure from the "other place" who was there when Christopher and his father died, a being whose purpose and nature is unknown, but who says his name, for the moment, is "Mr Keeper" and that Christopher bringing people back will have consequences.

And there's a last page reveal which really does make me want to see this followed up.

Now, whilst not completely original in concept, it's a solid foundation for a series. It's "Pushing Daisies" without the cute overload, meets CSI, and a little of the Tangent Green Lantern thrown in (and maybe a touch of Jeff Goldblum's short lived, but excellent, series Raines (Where a police detective has the habit of turning murder victims he's investigating into something akin to imaginary friends, figments of his imagination who accompany him and give him a new partner each episode)

We have a protagonist with an ability which lends itself to plots and their resolutions, and plenty of scope for more goings-on with Mr Keeper and what the "other place" really is.

I hope to see more of this (Even if he doesn't get gagged as often as once he did)

This does look good but I don't see why they needed to attach the Kid Eternity name to it. It has pretty much nothing to do with the original character. Even less than Dial H which at least kept the same basic concept of spin the dial, get a weird superhero.

Augh, damnnit, you posted this. I was going to post it.

I loved this book. Cool art, neat story, fun character. (He gets no respect!) He's not really that connected to the old character, but that's sorta what I like about him. (Like the new Ray.) Definitely worth a pick-up.

Yeah, you can kind of tell this is a Lemire book. The guy has to be handling, like, over 50% of the 'weird shit' quota of the DCnU. Not to say 'shit' in a bad sense, because this looks pretty interesting.

I hope the Rose and Thorn one they're doing soon is as good as this seems to be.

Is Deadman a public figure in the NuDCU? Didn't think his existence was known outside the superhero circles before this.

And he can bring only the newly dead back? Aww, no Tesla.

On the other hand, if he's been chatting with ghost semi-regularly, he may have heard of him.

His last name is Freeman though isn't it? Think he may still have a connection to the new Freddie over in Justice League?

Are they even going to do Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel? I fear with the Flashpoint kids they're all gonna be Captain Marvel....and thus omit Mary Marvel and Marvel Junior entirely.

Really disrespectful tbh for the first female spin-off of a male character ( I think), she's one of the oldest superheroes, in the right hands Mary would be amazing heroine to feature in a book. Ughhhhhhh poor girl.
