Cringeworthy Comicbook Moments: Jessica Brings Up An Unfortunate Part of Ms. Marvel's Backstory

Possible trigger warning for discussion of rape

From the sequel to Jessica's solo series Alias, she's beginning to give birth to her and Luke Cage's baby. He feels that this is a good time to bring up her friend Carol Danver's last pregnancy, much to the discomfort of everyone of the room.

And I swear that I'm not posting this just because of that Todd Akin guy's moronic comments a few days ago.

Carol, this might not be the best time, but is your superhero outfit really the best thing to be wearing in a hospital?

And it just occured to be that getting mysteriously pregnant is something that she has in common with Power Girl, who pre-Crisis (I think) she was impregnanted by the universe for some reason (yeah, really). Since this was shortly after she slept with Hal Jordan, he naturally decided to act like an ass and start yelling at her for denying that it was his baby.

pregnancy? It's very very douchy, but perhaps while you are scared out of your wit and in the process of giving birth, you're not in the right state of mind to realise that making someone tell about their rape to amaze your boyfriend isn't something you do to your friend. I dunno.

Or just.... BENDISED!

Yeah, pregnancy and everything makes it understandable to ask I guess, but it's still an unbelievably stupid thing to bring up.
I'm firmly with mrstatham on this, the exchange should have ended with Carol telling her "fuck you."

yeah i don't really have a problem with teh Question (pregnancy/labor brain) and the fact that Jessica is terrified out of her mind, its that She explained the situation.

Fuck you would have even been in character with thier relationship really.

I think the 'fuck you' would have been more in keeping with Bendis' work on Alias, but given The Pulse basically ended up being a PG-13 take on Alias, we get this instead.

Edit: I mean, hell, even if it's more of a humoured 'fuck you' from Carol who knows what Jess is doing, that'd still work better.

These two share a love for dark humour... ? If thats not the case, then yeah, pretty messed up.

Though I've seen BFFs talk about things with similar nonchalant attitudes. Carol doesn't even seem that bothered here.

I don't know, there's that panel where she's saying 'I gave birth' and her eyes just suggest a 'why the fuck am I telling my best friend's boyfriend this' look going on.

To be fair, though, by this point I don't think this was a MAX book, so it's not like she could actually say that.
