Remember that... well, let's be kind and say "anatomically challenged" cover to Catwoman #0?

Yes, I thought you might... Well, it looks like someone listened....

But fret not lovers of improbably proportioned and positioned anatomy

You still have this sketch card from the "New 52" series

This is approaching the levels of optical illusion. Seriously Dinah, being able to stand like that is practically a superpower in and of itself!

But because I like you and have no wish to traumatise you, a few other sketch cards from the series

Damian, by Dustin Nguyen

And three by the delightful Andy Price

A "Why yes, I AM all that!" Aquaman

Dex Starr meets a Green Lantern a la Chuck Jones perhaps?

And a little Bat-sidekick booty, but not my usual target... enjoy! :)

Well, at least the Catwoman cover is better.

The card reminds me of a time I tried to draw a parody of the ass n' boobs pose. A parody that apparently fails by virtue of not being exaggerated enough.

Catwoman's cover looks so much better now, why didn't they just draw it that way in the first place! Plus the colours are so much better!

There needs to be a female superhero with super-stretching abilities so she can lampshade this trope.

Dustin Nguyen... never seen him asa very good comic artist. Grown out of his style to be honest.

It's weird seeing Flamebirds costume as y'know, it just looks very silly, I love her though, don't really know why.

from what i read Guillem DID do a few of the less provacative sketches... he always does actually, and editorial ALWAYS chooses these, (or tells him to draw it like this)

her first costume i didn't like much. her current one is much better.

It's still a ridiculous position, but you can't see her cleavage so America's children are safe.

Gotta say, I don't really get the improvement. They've just lengthened her spine? And zipped her up. But the pose.. Is the same. Or harder.

I always thought the spine WAS the main problem, in that March originally had it bent so that it was almost at a 90 degree angle.

From: [personal profile] greenmask
Yeah but it's still bent the same, only we can see MORE of it, so it's an even less anatomically sound picture.

I mean look at the first photo an how heavily arched up her spine is, turning her into a ball essentially. The new pose is more anatomically correct, it could be done, or at least get something close enough to it. So I can agree that it's an improvement.

At least in the sense that if they release this one first, there'd be far less of an issue.

Like as far as I can see he's just inserted more back whilst keeping the angle of both upper torso and hips?

From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
I don't know about that--it seems like now more of the bend is on the shoulders and not in the middle of the spine.

There might be a slight difference there, I suppose. But then, her ass is angled a smidge higher on the new one.

I don't trust it as an improvement at all. My eyes feel fobbed off; I think the original was just more obviously contorted because we're used to seeing heroines contorted but not circular.

Holy hell, you're right.

That's unsettling.

Yeah, I have to agree. With more of her lower back visible, the middle section of her spine must be contorted even more sharply to result in her upper torso pointing straight out of the page. Also her hand is huge.

On the plus side, her head is positioned much better relative to her shoulders.

One thing that I REALLY love about the new cover is the colors for it. Never was a huge fan of Selina in blue/grey. The shiny black leather looks better and, quite frankly, sexier to me. :D

That Dinah pic horrifies me. Her breasts are both on the same side of her chest, and that spine works days as a twisty straw.

On the upside, Dex-Starr makes everything better.

It's less traumatizing to be sure, I applaud the artists.
But they make up for the oversexuality by making her overly leather shiny, so... as they said, not quite "good" but better.

I keep looking at that arm coming towards us and thinking "HOW I DO FORESHORTEN?"

It's still a pretty silly pose, and it doesn't look at all like she's bursting through the cover, which totally throws the background concept out the window. But it does have the effect of highlighting just how terrible the original design was, so that's a plus.

Still out of proportion. Those legs, wtf that front leg, imagine straightening that out, not to mention it doesn't actually match the back one even if you take into account foreshortening and I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to see quite that much boob but I couldn't say for certain.

Don't even get me started on the Black Canary one. I might end up doing another submit to Escher girls.

I mean, the cleavage isn't really necessary. Of course Catwoman has to be sexy, that's her power as an icon--in and outside of comics. But for god's sake, she wears a skintight leather(or vinyl) fetish outfit that in fact at this point is NAMED AFTER HER. By relying on the cleavage, well, you're just being lazy and not using the natural advantages of said outfit. But then, I imagine an untalented artist has a tougher time depicting that material on a body than just drawing a pair of breasts bursting out of it. Which is also kind of ridiculous also because then the whole thing comes open. The first one shows an artist who obviously hasn't the slightest idea how that outfit really works on a body.

You basically want, with this kind of outfit, to be thinking, "What would Frank Quitely do?" (or Howard Chaykin, another master of actually making plausible sexy outfits)

What I'm saying is that in fact that first picture made her LESS sexy, and in fact kind of laughable. The second one, though no masterpiece, accomplishes the goal more elegantly.

And all this completely leaves aside the even more laughable aspect, the completely ridiculous pose and grotesquely distorted anatomy--if you can call it that.

Interesting that the writer and artist were both replaced by women, though. Although, Melo's art is just as cheesecakey as March's was... Why do women who draw comics do that?

My main thought on the Black Canary card?

She's relatively not terrible for an Escher Girl... The boobs are too big, and there's no way to get them and the butt in those poses at the same time, but...at least her midsection can contain her organs, and the artist opted for a single impossible pose for her spine, rather than turning her into a full-on corkscrew (and only slightly centaurish).
