[personal profile] icon_uk posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Today is Remembrance Sunday, traditionally the day to honour those in the military who have fallen in wars throughout the world, and throughout the years.

And I recently came into ownership of a fascinating collection, "The Dandy - 1937 to 2012" a collection from 75 years worth of a single British comic (For those in the UK, it's available from WH Smith and I thoroughly recommend it).

The Dandy is about to cease publication and move to an entirely online platform, which makes me a sad icon_UK, but such is life.

I'll be posting more from it in the weeks ahead, but for now a couple of these seem apt for the day, since as part of that 75 year span was, of course, World War II.

I've added the trigger warning for racism, since the depiction of Germans within may be considered to be tasteless.

First up, that fine British tradition of mockery of ones enemies in 1939 or 1940.

As noted in the intro, that was eventually removed as being too whimsical for such a serious, ongoing threat. The term "concentration camp" had also not picked up it's association with the atrocities of the Holocaust yet.

Another example from the "Stiff upper lip" school from the country which invented the marvellous wartime slogan "Keep Calm and Carry " on was this "Blitz Boy" series from the 1960's.

Mick deals with some bullies intent on chasing Tommy, by careful application of marbles under their feet.

Lovely dynamic action sequence coming up here, say what you like about the limitations of minimal colour printing, but this is quality artwork.

Quick Mick follows a suspicious stranger who appears to be up to something (part of the longer story arc, but...

And then Mick saves the day one final time, by using the supplies from the apparently-destroyed-in-an-air-raid-but-actually-still-secretly-accessible basement of a department store where he has been living (as only he knows the way in), to get Tommy a new football.
