Hello again!

In the previous issue of The Defenders, we saw Kyle (Nighthawk) Richmond be captured by the Headmen, who transplanted the brain of Chondu the Mystic into his skull. Chondu infiltrated the Defenders, but tipped his hand too early, allowing him to be captured by our heroes.

Now, issue #32. Six pages of eighteen, plus dessert (and I mean that a bit more literally this time.)

Hellstrom confirms it isn't demonic possession, nor is it sorcery, which Doctor Strange has already checked for. The Son of Satan has to get back to his own business, but will be back in a later plotline. Doc Strange decides it's time to whip out the all-seeing Eye of Agamotto. This reveals the face of the person who's actually inside Kyle's body.

Surprisingly, it's Jack Norriss who recognizes the villain. It turns out his first date with Barbara (Valkyrie's body) was at the Vermont State Fair, where Chondu performed...badly. This triggers a flood of memories for Jack, which he insists Valkyrie should be able to recall as well.

Doc interrupts before this can get out of hand, and reveals that Chondu's secret identity is Harvey Schlemerman. But then, where is Kyle Richmond?

Doctor Strange now uses the Orb of Agamotto to attempt to contact Kyle's mind , but Kyle is at a darkened crossroads with no lettering on the signs. Doc finally realizes that it's a surgical brain swap, and comes up with a plan that will need Jack Norriss' help. Soon, all the Defenders take to the air.

Meanwhile, Kyle has his own problems. Here at the crossroads, being attacked by actual hawks under the command of Death. And then suddenly he's falling down a slide.

Kyle is repeatedly lectured by the principal about his troublemaking until age seventeen, when he finally snapped and hit the hectoring official. He was denied a letter of recommendation to college.

But the Richmond money got him into an upstate New York school named Grayburn. Unlike the boys' school, Kyle was allowed to have a car, and wander around, and met a girl named Mindy. Inspired by Mindy, Kyle decided to buckle down to his studies...and discovered that his coasting had left him ill-prepared for actual education.

He ran wild after that, and managed to get his car wrecked and Mindy killed. (Thus why Trish Starr getting blown up in his car hit him even harder than you'd expect.) The Dean expelled Kyle, who refused to let his father bail him out of this one. And then his draft notice arrived.

Kyle's 4-F status would be revisited in a future Defenders story. The crash sounded like it was based on a real-life incident, but if so, it didn't happen at JFK. He returns to the crossroads, still lost.

Back in the material world, the Defenders land in Westbury, Connecticut. The Hulk has been here before. Approaching a seemingly normal suburban house, Doctor Strange rings the doorbell. A glowing woman in white robes greets the heroes, and Nighthawk references Kathryn Kuhlman. Unlike the real Kuhlman, this one's head explodes, knocking the Defenders out. Even the Hulk via "anti-gamma radiation."Nagan gloats about controlling the world peacefully.

And now, since they are in the news....

The second crook was obviously hoping to be more like the fellow from the 2000 AD post a bit back.

Next time--The return of Bambi!

I like the scientist's "Oh my god" reaction to Ruby. I think that's how most sane people would react to meeting a woman with a giant ball for a head and wearing that outfit.
And I'm just going to assume that after that Hostess ad ended, Peter returned to the kidnappers and beat the shit out of them, because no one messes with Aunt May.

They really need to bring back the Headmen in a big way. Between the financial meltdown, and the Headmen's previous experience with that they could be a unique foe that could threaten the good guys in ways they couldn't even plan for.
