Posting an old s_d post with new cleaner scans.

Superhero fashion ranges with the time of their origin. Throughout superhero fashion history some common choice occur: capes, face masks, boots, and underwear.

Admittedly, underwear is more of a classic choice. Maybe this will help show why? Maybe...

Now in there first appearance here is The Lynx and Blackie!

The Lynx and Blackie ran in Mystery Men Comics 13 to 31. Unfortunately, Lynx didn't keep the costume. By Mystery Men Comics #21 he has a shirt with a logo. Though Blackie still has to save him from a deathly peril classically reserved for women.

The Lynx and Blackie seem familiar somehow? DC thought so too. This was one of the tittles DC Comics sued Fox Comics over, winning $2,000.

Scans from Mystery Men Comics #13 (Aug 1940). (Which included Blue Beetle, Wing Turner, Rex Dexter Interplanetary Adventurer of Mars, Billy Bouce the Kid Detective, Chen Chang, Lt. Drake of Naval Intelligence, D-13 Secret Agent, the Green Mask (finally given a name; Michael Selby), Zanzibar the Magician, Captain Savage Sea Rover, and Lynx with Blackie the Mystery Boy (first appearance))

Make The Lynx's mask cover most of his face and remove Blackie's shirt, and this is a Luchadore comic!

I thought he was walking around half-naked for a while until I looked closer at the panels above the bit where he leaps for the tree and saw that the torso/arms/legs were coloured slightly differently from the face.

Me, too. Possibly he was colored so lightly to (ironically) avoid legal trouble with Fawcett over Mr Scarlet and Pinky?

You would think that he'd have a more lynx-like costume, as well. Maybe nobody knew what a lynx looked like. And Blackie has not a spot of black on his costume :)

Odd, I don't think I've ever seen another pair who look like they actually tie their capes around their necks, like they were pillowcases.

His torso, arms and legs are only colored differently from his face in eight out of twenty-nine panels, though. As Blackie's legs are colored the same shade only in two of those same panels, I'm inclined to think that Lynx really is running around half-naked and the leotard is a coloring error.

Lynx! Or as he's known in the UK: Axe!

Other way around I think? Lynx is what it's called here in the UK, Axe is what it's called in the US.

Ah, but he's already called Lynx in America, so he'd have the US name in the UK, yes?
