So much for getting it back to his family, huh, Stranger?

Stranger must have known that he wouldn't manage it, because he'd been told before he couldn't, I suspect the light thingie may have been slipped b the Stranger to someone else on the team who the angel banished.

So his wife is going to be Kimiyo Hoshi and she's going to inherit his powers calling it now. Unless they get him back by the end of the issue?

That'd be my guess too.

Somewhat of a shame I always liked she was completely removed from him in her origins and that she had such a big role in Crisis. I liked that there were two individuals with the same name and shtick and more or less costume at the same time in the same canon and better yet one heroic the other not. Marvel does that a whole lot better than DC, the shared codename thing. We can't POSSIBLY have that now can we (glares at Batgirl).

The idea they were married and had kids after the reboot is pretty ingenious in a squicky way especially in the light of DC dissolving all of the other heroes marriages and wiping away children. But def the frequency that he has mentioned his wife she is no doubt going to be the next Doctor Light. Hopefully as speculated it's Kimiyo and not a new white woman.

It'll be especially interesting if/when Arthur Light does come back, probably as a more tragic but still serious villain.

I've been assuming that since Arthur's death (though I figured his spirit would be visiting her directly before this issue).

OH wow apparently they've said his wife's name is Kim (?) already and there was a family picture of him and his family in his office. She's notably Asian.

Paging Dr.'re up.

It's been looking like that really since his introduction in JLA, but yeah, this was the first real official confirmation.

Is anyone else kinda weirded out that in the DCU Heaven and Hell a dead person ends up in are generated entirely by their own minds?

Might be that in Heaven you get what you need, in Hell you get what you deserve.

Supernatural used the same plot device a few years back. One of Sam and Dean's trips through the afterlife took them through various planes of Heaven, where they caught up with a character that died many years back and learned how it worked up there.

IIRC, the concept in Supernatural is that everyone gets a slice of heaven they can remake to whatever they want it to be, but you can go visit other people's heavens. So it's like a super awesome house they give you.

Like I said above, if you want to see what probably inspired that take on Heaven/Hell, you should really check out RIchard Matheson's "What Dreams May Come."

I'd imagine it would be the same process at work in either case, and the tone of the afterlife experience would be determined by the soul that's doing the universe-building.

It's not a new concept for DCU, the Hal!Spectre series also used it. Hell was created by the souls that had been condemned there. By themselves.

Of course there's some bits that don't really work with this portrayal. Like Etrigan.

That's actually not a new concept--another book that had something similar was What Dreams May Come, written by Richard Matheson that had a similar view of Heaven. When talking about it, Matheson said that outside of the characters themselves, all the details he put in were from extensive research he put in not only different forms of philosophy, but from real people's testimonies of near-death experiences, and the book includes a several page bibliography at the end. I definitely recommend reading it--there was also a movie adaptation starring Robin Williams that was pretty good too.

And if you think that's weird, since the start of DeMatteis' run, he's had God appear in the book as a big player in the book, and he's typically appeared as a cute little dog.

Two of my favorite (unfairly obscuer) books deal with this concept as well: Waiting For The Galactic Bus and The Snake Oil Wars.: Long story short: People end up in which ever place they think they deserve, resulting a bunch of good people "Below Stairs" (Hell) and a ton of evil bastards "Topside" (Heaven). And those of a strong enough will can shape the world around them to their liking.

Not...really? It's pretty much how I've always assumed they would work, since...neither would quite work, otherwise. (Well, Hell might, but, barring the 'complete rewrite of your mind' that exists in some versions, it would be hard to have Heaven as perfect happiness if it wasn't tailored to the person's needs and desires.)

Why does Batman appear to be talking in the exaggerated Frank Miller style that Linkara likes making fun of so much in his videos?

Never underestimate the power of a bromance.

I actually really liked how DeMatteis wrote him--he's risking everything to try to save his friend. Earlier in the issue, some of the rescue team gets sucked into their own heaven, and we see Batman's as being Christmas with his parents forever, which he walks into and listens for a while before returning to his mission, content that he'll be there someday.

Plus the "Bringing the dead back to life? That's insane. I like it." bit just made me laugh. :D
