From Huntress: Cry for Blood by Greg Rucka

Just re-read this for the first time in ages, and GAH, it’s so good!

Not entirely sure where the Falcones fit in, though the Mafia families mentioned here are generally the only ones that showed up in Bat Books from the late Nineties through to the present, so they can probably just be ignored as they only either appear in Frank Miller stuff or stuff that borrows greatly from his, like the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale stories.

Not that it matters, what with the reboot and all...

Seriously, I get them wanting to use a different take on the character, but why go through the trouble of her being a "fake" identity? Bah, tis dumb.

Will post more Cry for Blood later, as it also has plenty of awesome Vic Sage in it.

Ooh! Thanks - I've been working on some way to reconcile Gotham's many, many mobs for quite a while now. Couple more names to add to the roster!

Hmm- I think the Falcones were tied pretty closely to Chicago crime in the Miller books- perhaps the expansion to Gotham was fairly recent?

I DC still using those random words and letters when it comes to things like that in the passport? I always found it distracting...

Funny coincidence: I was just rereading Cry for Blood myself just last week. You're right, it was so good.

I have long maintained that it's the best superhero or masked-vigilante origin story ever written. It's the same basic plot as Batman's origin story--scion of wealthy, prominent family watches as parents gunned down before her eyes, resolves to take revenge on criminals as a class, spends years training overseas, inspired by bat crashing through window to become mysterious figure of terror to criminal underworld--as is even remarked upon in the story by Oracle, Robin, and Question, but as tragedy, instead of as comedy.

When I say that Batman's origin story is a comedy, I don't mean that it is funny, but rather that everything in it is random: his parents are killed in totally random mugging, he randomly decides to become a vigilante (instead of policeman, prosecutor, or other, legal crime-fighter), a bat randomly happens to crash through his window one night, etc. Whereas, for Huntress, everything that happens to her is inevitable, because of her heritage: providence or fate raises up the ultimate mafia princess as the destroyer, the nemesis, if you will, of the Gotham mob. It's really just too perfect.

Who's the artist of Cry For Blood? Looks very Howard Chaykin like.

Rick Burchett drew all six issues and inked the first four. Terry Beatty inked issues five and six. Tatjana Wood did the colors.

Officer Down has this interesting bit.
"The Vittones were running Chicago when Bertinelli ran this town."
"Told you I was young."

In that story, it is implied that going back to when the Bertinellis ran things implies it was a LONG time ago.

Well, you'd have to go back to when Helena was no more than eight years old, and she's at least in her twenties as of Cry for Blood, maybe her early thirties (estimating the age of a comic-book character is a dicey business at best). If she's 28, then you'd have to go back at least twenty years.
