A couple of interesting covers from DC's solicitations for January 2014

From Newsarama's full listing of DC solicitations for Janaury 2014

Nightwing 27 - Nightwing’s being visited by an old friend from Gotham — the Mad Hatter! Desperate to protect Chicago, Nightwing’s been forced into an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Marionette. But who’s really pulling the strings?

So is this set after Forever Evil #1 or not, I wonder?

BATMAN AND ROBIN ANNUAL #2 -A YEAR ONE ADVENTURE OF DICK GRAYSON AS ROBIN! Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson have shared a distinctive crimefighting role: Both have played Batman to a young Robin, so when they discover something important that Damian left behind it leads them to relive one of their first adventures in Gotham City as Batman and Robin!

About fricking time we saw a proper Bruce/Dick Batman Robin adventure, long overdue, and nice to see it acknowledged that Damian was more Dick’s Robin than he ever was Bruce’s.

Batgirl 27 - In this tale tying into “GOTHTOPIA,” what kind of sick world pairs up Batgirl and the woman who tried to kill Jim Gordon — Knightfall?!

Mostly included because I rather like that version of her costume.

Catwoman 27 - A “GOTHTOPIA” tie-In! Everything’s all right in Selina Kyle’s world. As the fabled Catbird of Gotham City, she fights alongside Batman to keep the city safe. So why does it all feel so wrong?

I have NO idea what's going on there, especially with that tunic she's wearing.

Solid covers and artists on those four! Who did the B+R cover?

I dig Bab's new duds - they remind me of those pretty White Lantern Corps uniforms. Just might be snow gear, though.

Also, this Gothtopia sounds interesting. I wonder if it's some kind of BioShock Infinite-type story.

I think B&R's cover is Mike McKone.

As for Gothtopia, I was thinking more along the lines of "For The Man Who Has Everything, but that might make a little more sense, since both Birds of Prey and Batgirl doesn't imply good things going on with them.

Thanks! I'm up to speed on Batgirl, but what's the lowdown on Birds? D'you mind giving me an elevator pitch?

I'd like to, but I quit it around the WTF-cover. First they took my new favorite character from BOP and had her betray the team for Mister Freeze, of all people, and then the only other semi-sorta-interesting bits from the Christy Marx issues I read was Black Canary hooking up with Condor, and I use the word "interesting" very loosely.

Really wishing she would be dropped for another writer.

The real problem is that Marx is on probably one of the most heavily edited books there is. Starling was taken out by editorial, she has Batgirl via editorial, she has to deal with stuff like Black Canary's husband via editorial - and that is something DC insist as playing as a mystery game or something that's actually interesting when it's not. Marx was left picking up the pieces from the book's first writer and was a sudden appointment when the incoming writer bailed. It can't be easy for her, but.. Well, fingers crossed things pick up. She's already expressed interest in wanting to bring Starling back into the fold, but the book's first writer also said that about Poison Ivy, and in the wake of stuff like Forever Evil, that seems dubious.

If she brings Starling back I'll probably give it another shot. I mean, the first writer did heavily hint that she was a double agent, but it was for Amanda Waller, not Mister Freeze, that just seemed...really random. Hell, I'm a little tempted to give it another shot with the Gothtopia crossover.

Well, I hope Christy Marx gets enough wiggle room to do the story she'd like to do. From what little I've read in s_d, it seems like the Birds were quite a team back in the day. Not sure about that, though.
