Ah, the old evil-counterparts trick!

Let me just say, apart from anything else about this story, "Your hair... or even you might not exist," is my new favorite way to explain the concept of alternate universes.

So... evil avengers?

Evil Avengers. Really more Conquerors, it seems. Avenger Lords? I don't know. The name doesn't stick as much when all you're avenging is your own disappointed entitlement.

Well, Thor's certainly coming off as an entitled jerk here, but plenty of the Avengers have things that could be avenged to an extent that would qualify as villainy.

Tony was kidnapped by guerillas of some stripe (I have no idea what his current backstory has their nationality/cause being), mortally wounded, and forced to live on life support. Maybe here, instead of just breaking out of the camp, he decided to end the conflict completely and took over the country.

Hulk's been pursued by the military for years. Maybe here he gave up on being left alone and took the fight to them.

Cap lost his entire world, to have it replaced by the sixties (or whatever decade. You get the idea). Maybe here he's refused to get with the times, and has decided to force the world to conform to his (presumably more regressive than our Cap's) ideals.

Hank and the Wasp... huh. Something about Eastern European spies? And space aliens? I don't actually know their backstory. But vengeance!

5th page, second (or first) panel... does it look like Cap is trying/about to grab Hulk's crotch?

What struck me first is how very very prominently both Cap's ass and Hulk's crotch are displayed there. But now that you've pointed it out, the big red reaching hand is all I can see.

The position of the hand and fingers makes me think he's rather going down for the, hm, other side of things.

Well, it was pretty obvious these weren't the past 616 Avengers seeing as Hulk left before Cap was thawed and (according to wikipedia) never rejoined until AvX.

But if these evil Avengers are really as early into their heroing (Villaining?) as their costumes would indicate, it would be kinda fun to see them totally curbstomped by their modern 616 counterparts. A decade or so of experience (and tech advancement for Tony) can make a lot of difference.

Might not even be Tony Stark, since this Iron Man seems much more dependent on his armor's information.

True, he even calls it "the" armor, rather than "my armor".

It seems as though they've successfully taken over their world. Which may indicate a higher power level on their part, or merely a lack of beings able and motivated to oppose them.

Did the Mandarin convince Iron Man that a pregnant Pepper was Fing Fang Foom in this universe?

If so, the only redeeming aspect would be the weirdly flirty relation between Hawkeye and... Madam Masque? Lady Deadpool?

(Who is Marvel's closest Harley equivalent, anyway?)

Moonstone, at least with her gunmoll first appearance. She even called Dr. Faustus "Dr. F" I think.

Shouldn't that be the Red Skull convincing Thor that a pregnant Jane Foster was the Midgard Serpent?

I like the evil Avengers idea, it was a nice fakeout on Marvel's part making us think they were going to recycle the All-New X-Men hook. Hopefully Hickman actually has some fun with this idea instead of doing his usally plodding "high concept" thing.

Kind of disappointed that they're just in the classic costumes though, I mean if you're gonna have evil Avengers why not have some fun with the costumes?

I think it's because that would have been too obvious. By putting them in the classic costumes, it keeps people from instantly realizing they're the evil ones.

Probably not, since those guys didn't have a Cap. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the inspiration for this story, though.

Wait, why is the time displaced Hulk talking in third person? He could speak in full sentences in those days.
