Previous part here,

Time passes, and while Graf and his squad are stuck witnessing the horrors of Stalingrad, Anna and Lukin are in the midst of whimsical romance. This is cut short, however, when Lukin's plane disappers while out of patrol. Anna... doesn't take the news well.

Anna starts beating herself up about this, saying that Lukin must have been distracted thinking about her, leading to him getting shot down. Zoya, who is flying with Anna for once, says that it was more likely that he was flying around like crazy trying to keep Nazi fighters away from the rookie pilots, as that's exactly the kind of brave thing he'd do.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, however, Anna still believes that despite what the witnesses saw, Lukin must have survived and is trying to get back to the Soviet lines, and that it's just a matter of waiting for him to turn up again. Ironically, it's at this point that a German nightfighter plane shows up, and riddles their plane with bullets, killing Zoya in the process.

Kurt Graf leaps on top of Anna, and hides her while his squad look around for her as he knows what they'll do if they capture her.

Wow! If there's one thing Ennis does well, it's war comics.

That was an interesting bit. Makes me wonder what my decisions would be if I was born in Germany during WWII and drafted into the army. He tried to be a good man, but despite what he did he was still invading another country. He was still killing people, sometimes civilians. He was still working for a government that participated in genocide.

His biggest mistake was not recognizing Nadia as a soldier, and treating her as such.

its a very bittersweet moment as her stabbing kurt is also kinda her crowning moment of badass, the moment that she fully accepted her role of protecting Russia (not to take away from all her other achievements).
