[personal profile] flint_marko posting in [community profile] scans_daily

After kicking Namor out of the group, the remaining members of the Illuminati discover that another incursion will happen in eight hours. Not wanting to be responsible for the destruction of another planet, they decide to do nothing but accept their fate and spend their last day on Earth.

After eight hours pass and nothing happens, they regroup to talk about what happened. They try figuring out if something was responsible, or if all they had done had been for nothing. Then Black Bolt gestures, "Where's Namor?"

While I can't say I saw this coming, this was probably the logical conclusion to everything that's happened in this story so far. The real question is whether the Illuminati will actually bother to stop him.

Why would Thanos care? If he knew Earth--nay, two Earths!--and everyone on them were to be destroyed, wouldn't he just go there and join them, to be with Death?

I think under the rules of the game, if our Earth collides with another earth, both universes cease to exist. So the standard afterlife may not apply.

Namor is by far the least impressive guy at that table, it really begs the question "Why did Thanos even agree to sit down for this meeting?"

Starlin Thanos, sure, maybe. Hickman Thanos I thought would just fly off in a blind rage killing something.

Also, how are they blowing up planets, exactly? They have some heavy hitters, but I'm not sure any characters in Marvel really pack that kind of heat. Maybe Sentry, but that makes sense since they equated him to Galactus on the power scale.

It looks like they have a planet buster bomb with them and are merely slaughtering that world's defenders.

It's gonna be damned hard to fix Namor after making him complicit in exploding multiple planets. Sigh.

And the asshole club remains ridiculously self centered. So they can't bring themselves to do the thing they decided was the only option. So they'll just let the world blow up without telling anyone.

And now conveniently there's a team of villains to do the world shattering for them while they'll probably moan about how they need to stop them and still not be shown actually working on the damn problem that they should have been working on from the minute this started but that would require good writing.

That tells me right there that the premise for this storyline is broken from the word "go." There was no solution because there wasn't meant to be a solution. The writer had a specific "moral" in mind and he wanted to get it across with as little subtlety as possible, regardless of characterization (well, of anyone not named Namor), execution, or even a sense of in-universe logic. I know we're really supposed to not see any of them as the good guy here...but it's framed as if Namor, the one who is all for destroying Earths across the multiverse, is right. Not good or moral. But right. And it makes me sick.

Also, reducing Storm to an "end of the world booty call" for T'Challa? Nice one, guys. Real nice. They couldn't have shown them sharing a moment on a balcony or just sitting inside reminiscing, laughing at old times?

The comic timing in this title is excellent.

This post, however, just shows the punchline without the set up.

There were some liner notes somewhere about him never dieing so long as his glaive remained. We saw his girlfriend holding it right after his body was destroyed, when she escaped.

As others have said please read the book before passing judgement. Please? You lose a lot of the emotional weight, epicness, and genuine comedy if you only see the scans.

New Avengers is literally my the book I look forward to the most every month now. Please at least give the actually books a read before just writing it off as yet another piece of 90's Grimdark.

Regardless of if it is grimdark or not I am completely uninterested in reading this story because worldending or herodeath stories interest me not at all. It is why I stopped reading Invincible, which initially I found interesting and fun.

Admittedly this is a decent payoff to the "Illuminati playing pokemon with their enemies" subplot.

At least Namor is taking action. The other Illuminati just gave up, letting two universes die, not even bothering to tell any other heroes about the upcoming incursion. Namor chose to save his world by killing a world that was going to be destroyed anyway. Tragic for that world, but they could have tried to destroy 616 Earth first, which also would have been understandable.

I would've gone for a solution like, 'find other worlds, route as many as possible to a world in *our* universe, then blow up world.'

Superheroism isn't about saving everyone all the time, it's about saving as many as you can when you can. I think most of the Illuminati lost sight of that.

And it must be said, the others can come up with different solutions, but Namor's a flying brick, he really can't, he can only pull the trigger, and he's been told by everyone that this is the only choice. Given the choice between one dying and both dying... one is the clear option.

The page where Black Panther freaks out is awesome. Like, the incursions could have happened with no adverse affects. Meaning they destroyed an Earth (and T'Challa uses "we" instead of "Namor") "for nothing. Nothing! NOTHING!!!"

Earth being the focus/focal/whatever point of the incursions is a little like BLACKEST NIGHT, where we find out Earth is special to the rest of the universe due to... reasons.

In fairness, Earth has been described as being cosmically pivotal in the MU for a few decades partly because of the Nexus of All Realities which intersects with Earth and links to any and all dimensions in the multiverse and the omniverse beyond.

So it being the focus for the world's colliding makes some sense, though I don't know if Hickman has referenced that.

Can we be done with this now, please? I'm starting to get tired of the sheer amount of selfish-stupid Hickman is framing the Illuminati to be.

Seriously, if the payout isn't "Everyone else finding out and ostracizing these guys for a few years only for them to eventually sorta redeem themselves", then what the heck is the point?

I just don't get it. What is Hickman trying to achieve with this title?

Honestly, it feels like just slamming your forehead into a wall over and over again. FOR TWO YEARS STRAIGHT. There's been no forward movement. There's been no real plot development. The core problem hasn't changed on iota from issue #1. The only change is that the main characters crossed a moral event horizon more than once, then finally hit one they couldn't cross...and then one of them crossed THAT ONE.

It does appear to have invalidated all the effort put into one or two previous events in the space of one issue, though. It just feels to me like HIckman's entire tenure on Avengers is just a huge waste of time.

I've actually been really enjoying this series. Mostly because, to me, it's showing the Illuminati for what they really are. I've never seen them as heroes. Maybe individually, but not as a group. They're failures, and they always have been. They failed to safeguard the Infinity Gems, they failed to keep the Skrulls away (hell, they made it worse), they failed the Hulk, they failed to prevent the various superhero civil wars, and now they keep failing to save the Earth. As soon as they get together, and set themselves above everyone else intellectually (and in Cap's case, morally), they automatically fail. The not-Justice League was a good example. They were a public team, not some shadowy group, and they managed to save multiple Earths. But then the Illumanati come along, and fuck things up, just like they *always do*.

I always found that line from Betsy a bit nauseating. And this is coming from a Betsy fan, though I was more a fan before she became a ninja. I mean we get it you are so totes destroyed by what you are doing and yet you keep doing it and blame peeps for supposedly "forcing" them to do these things. It seems to be replaying ad nauseum in Marvel comics the last 7ish years. Oh, look. here it is again. Do "I do what has to be done cause you cant" types think they are the only ones who make sacrifices? Its rather childish. Sooo bored with it. No one forces anyone into the hero business. You used to just take a break when things got tough and I miss that over this self righteous posturing and never ending squabbles. You know... you can just leave Betsy. You arent in a paid organization like the millitary and it isnt the mafia. Its all voluntary. These stories can be interesting when doe well but how Marvel does them is so heavy handed I cringe. I know Brian was manipulative but the line was so... ugh. And its the same with the Illuminati junk.
