It used to be so easy, variant covers were shiny foil versions of the normal cover, or had die-cut sections, or sometimes even holograms, and you could just ignore them...

But then come cunning bastard in Marketing came up with the idea of variant covers that readers might actually think were cool, or even worth the having. Case in point

Warning, a LOT of images under the cut, and unrepentently Silver Age-ish (and with thanks for Newsarama for sourcing them all in one place)

A series of Darwyn Cooke variant covers!

These will all beprinted longwise on the covers, which might mean they look a little less impressive on the shelf, but may well encourage people to at least pick them up and that's how buying starts...

Teen Titans

(So much to love in this one)

Batman and Robin

The Flash

Harley Quinn

Wonder Woman

Justice League

Green Lantern Corps

Justice League United

Action Comics

Superman and Wonder Woman

Detective Comics

Green Lantern

Justice League Dark

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Criminy, these are all so good! Too bad the contents within will not reflect the covers.

And what's up with all of these characters smiling? Even Wonder Woman? Didn't Cooke get the memo that's not "kewl" anymore?

The Harley Quinn one is so priceless and perfect.

I think he missed the memo about Superman's new "armor" as well. That's a slap on the wrist for Mr. Cooke.

And the Titans one is too much damn win for praise.

Sigh...if only...

... Superman and Batman are so gonna make out.

And is that Soranik in the GL cover? Has she returned?

It actually took me more than a second to notice the defused bomb on that cover, and I really thought that Darwyn Cooke had drawn those two as having just had sex.

My thought was that Bruce was saying, "See Clark? I told you we could slip in a quickie and still have time to stop it."

The subtext on that cover... OMG.
Just OMG.

So much pretty. Much awesomeness. Love these covers.
Pity they're deceptively awesome and the interiors will still mostly make me sad.

Interesting pick and choose of modern and classic looks (and characters in some instances.) I especially like the Detective Comcs one because it's so true to the characters but a scene that almost never appears on covers.

Oh man! It's just not fair! Why does Darwyn have to be so darn GOOD. I really really hope DC comes out with a book collecting all of these.

If Darwyn Cooke had a hand in DC's house style instead of Jim Lee, I'd be buying a LOT more DC books.

Also, holy crap that one of Alfred tucking Bruce in nearly killed me. How goddamn adorable.

It's the BTAS version then... well, similar to it. It makes sense, he was on the design crew back in the BTAS/Superman: the Animated Series days (I think he storyboarded some of it... definitely some of the latter).

Not sure about the other stuff, but I know for sure that the intro to Batman Beyond was all Darwyn.

I love all but one of these (because dear god, what is going on with Supergirl's horse's legs?) Especially the adorable Bruce and Alfred one.

Superman/Wonder Woman is pretty great, too.

EDIT: After googling some pictures of actual horses, I think it's the fact that her horse doesn't have any elbows that's throwing me.

Best-case scenario, this is more than just a charming variation on variants, it's a test of whether this is what the market wants to see today. In which case I hope it's a way bigger spike than the FUTURE'S END tie-ins. There are hints of hope that the "era of no fun" at DC may be on the way out: the shift in BATGIRL, the reception of GRAYSON, the announcement that SHAZAM the movie is actually going to try having a sense of humor, THE MULTIVERSITY, and now this. Of course, you've still got plenty of recklessly depressing material, but it seems like we're seeing smiles on DC covers a little more often these days.

It really is great how Darwyn makes everything charming, whether he's executing a cover idea that could be fifty years old or taking on series created three years ago or less. GRAYSON is a natural fit, of course, but HARLEY QUINN and JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED look just as inviting. The SUPERMAN AND WONDER WOMAN cover is a particularly interesting take, imagining as it does a more mature romance between more mature versions of the characters than their current incarnations.

Even when I might have continuity quibbles, the illustrations just sweep me along until I think of them as no more than points of interest, questions to be answered in the stories they bring to mind. Skeletor might not normally be a match for He-Man and She-Ra working together, but damn if the energy in that cover doesn't convince me they've got something to worry about.

Every last one of these is a thing of beauty. It's a testament to Cooke's artwork... both in terms of linework and flavour... that his is the first Wonder Woman/Superman couple image that actually seems plausible to me.

And that GL spread... wow. That's how I see the GLC in my mind, too.

This are all so amazing. It's still odd seeing Cyborg on the Justice League cover and strange that the Teen Titans cover has the original 5 instead of the characters that are Titans in the New-52.
My favorite has to be the Batman/Superman cover because it's so nice seeing those two happy to work together. So sick of them not trusting each other.

These covers are the best thing DC has put out in years. And makes me sad that the happy fun depicted in them doesn't reflect the comics we get these days.

...although they're terrible covers, since they don't tell you anything about what goes on in the issues. But that seems to be a dying art anyway.

Darwyn Cooke, the way to immediately make any comic more classy!

Though some of these seem to be based on his New Frontier designs, which saddens me as I'd rather the New 52 followed on from that frankly. :(

That was my view as well. There was no need to mess with Harley's original design which was perfect for one that was...not nearly as good (understatement) but Cooke actually makes it look decent.

I'm impressed he's managed to draw her in that costume without being overly sexualised. It'd be hard to draw her stood with her arms by her sides and his hips and shoulders level without making her look like a playboy pin up. Yes, her bum's in the air and her cleavage is towards us, but it's a natural human pose and really makes that absurd outfit easier to bear. Also, really cute facial expression.

Wow! This is the DC I fell in love with: heroes happy to be heroes and actually friendly with each other!

The Titans as rock band? *big smile*

Nice to see the Dynamic Duo in action!

The Batman/Superman cover is priceless! I did buy that title when they first launched it but it was mostly how much they couldn't stand each other so dropped it. I don't read S/B for hostility, thank you very much. Batman's smile and Superman's look of relief is wonderful.

The romantic Wonder Woman/Superman should be Wonder Woman/Steve Trevor! Sorry, just see Diana and Clark as best buds, not lovers.

Anything Wondy that Cooke draws, I love!

That janitor must wonder why Clark Kent's hat and glasses always end up in his closet! ;)

Ah, my Supergirl! Very happy to see her. :)

Alfred tucking Bruce in? Awww!!!

I even like Grayson! Well, I love our original Robin, not sure about his current book, but the cover is what I like. ;)

Thanks for posting these! The covers are really great. Some happy nostalgia for me. :)

For personal reasons I love them all except the WW/Superman thing (when will that be over already!). The Supergirl in particular reminds me of the Jim Mooney/Otto Binder era (and that costume is superior to what they've had her wearing since they rebooted her back with Loeb/Turner). I do wish there was a Shazam one since those characters seem meant for Darwyn Cooke's type of art.
