Here's a short story from Creepy #63. For those interested this was made into an episode of 'Masters of Horror' directed by Dario Argento.

Warning: There's some gory stuff here as well as what I think is an implied rape scene.

As always, if you have any requests for any horror comics -- be it EC, Warren, a manga, etc -- let me know and I'll try to see if I can post it.

The story opens with a man on a hunting trip hearing sobbing in the woods. He comes across a man with an axe over a bound girl over a log. He tells him to drop the axe or he'll shoot and, when he doesn't, kills him. Before dying, his last words are "Jenifer" and the protagonist realizes he was the one sobbing.

The authorities believe his story. Upon hearing that she is to be institutionalized, the protagonist (we find out later his name is Jim) feels pity for Jenifer and motions to adopt her. He brings her home to his wife and two kids, who are frightened by Jenifer's appearance. Jenifer's presence soon becomes a strain on the family which further escalates when she apparently bites the wife. She tells Jim that she'll take the kids and leave unless he takes Jenifer to the institution. Upon doing so, Jenifer begins to cry again, and Jim lies to his wife that the institution was overcrowded, and that he'll try again tomorrow. This never happens, and Jenifer ends up staying for the next couple of months.

Jim feels helpless as he can't bring himself to get rid of her. Finally, he finds the family cat drowned in the bathtub, which is the final straw for Jim's family.

He buries the body in a deserted field, sells his business and goes on the road with Jenifer. After a series of motel rooms, he eventually comes across a farmhouse where he lives with Jenifer in misery but unable to escape her hold on him. Later, he discovers that a child has gone missing and assumes the worst.

I've always been partial to Scott Hampton when it comes to horror stories, but Bernie's a close second. Bruce Jones really fits the genre too, though I don't really like his superhero stuff that much.

I vaguely recall seeing a reprint of a horror story about a teenager drowning and his friends thinking he is playing a joke on them. It might have been EC but I am not sure.

Ah, a "vicious cyle" story. Like the snake swallowing its tail.

The freakshow guy is worried about the consequences for breaking and entering, but he seems a-okay with kidnapping and enslaving a deformed girl. The potential consequences of that apparently aren't significant.

Were deformed people really held in such low regard back when this was written?

I had to look up the date; from the art I was thinking this was 90s or later, but it was '74. An era in which care was definitely improving, but still very much depended on where you were - a lot of those group homes that enslaved their occupants were just getting their starts as public opinion turned against asylums. You're into an era of out of sight, out of mind.

Generally, I think if you're the kind of guy to run a freakshow, you're probably not the kind of guy to worry too much about ethics. Considering a lot also operated as brothels too! As long as there aren't legal consequences he's probably not bothered.

Always thought that this story was actually kind of sad, what with it being about a mentally and physically disabled young woman who is sexually abused by a series of male guardians rather than getting her the actual professional care she needs.

I mean, seriously, are we given any indication that she's mentally competant in the story? We just have a lot of projected stuff from the protagonist, who seems to project a lot of blame onto a young woman who doesn't seem to understand what it is she's doing wrong.

I understand that she's dangerous, but if she didn't have a succession of men taking her home because they find her hot from the neck down rather than taking her to a hospital, she wouldn't be in the position to hurt people, would she?

It seems pretty well-established that the main point of focus is her eyes and not her body, and whatever seemingly hypnotic powers those eyes have. Quoth the top right-hand panel of the second posted page:

"But I didn't get rid of her. I couldn't. Everytime I tried, Everytime I threatened, she'd look at me with those eyes..."

And then she goes on to (what is pretty much) rape him if anything, on the same page. Even the desire to kill her doesn't seem to be actually coming from the narrator, as the "decision" to raise the axe appears to be completely out of his control, as I glean from my reading of the last page.

Admittedly, maybe this is a rather jaundiced account as we never get into any of Jenifer's thoughts, but a straightforward reading would suggest that she has a grip on her victims beginning from the moment they "rescue" her.

She's an evil rapist cannibal with hypnotic powers who has made a habit of destroying her "rescuer's" lives before moving on to her next victim. Basically, she's a serial killer. If you feel sorry for her, you fell into the same trap the protagonist did.

I think her hypnotic ability to control her various rescuers seems to be powerful enough that none of them are entirely in control of their actions from the moment they meet her, and she makes the predatory sexual moves, not Jim.
