Oh, that last panel is awesome.

One tongue-in-cheek nitpick: I find it hard to believe the Necronomicon would provide instructions for sending Cthulhu (nor any other Old One) back.

Who says the instructions actually work? Putting fake instructions in would be just like Nyarlathoteph.

Fair point. And, after all, what's one to do if the instructions turn out fake? Rate them as "unhelpful?" Downvotes mean nothing to Nyarlathotep!

"Oh come on, why are there TWO versions of Cthulhu now! How is that even supposed to work?!"
"Heh heh heh."

If there was a version without the word balloons I'd print it out as a poster and put it up on a wall.

To be fair, Cthulhu was once banished by hitting him in the head with a boat.

Steam yacht, a former war vessel too. Those go up to 1000+ tons. And it was healing while the ship was still passing through its head.

Sorry, old pet peeve.

Even so!

The Elder Gods aren't as un-foilable as some like to make them out. Maybe un-killable (that which is not dead, after all..) but they can certainly be delayed.

I think you mean Outer Gods, and Cthulhu isn't one anyway. Just an immensely powerful alien being. And, yes, while he can be delayed Lovecraft painted the "When stars are right" scenario as doomsday. Inevitable.

I mean, that was his whole narrative, basically. Dark, uncaring universe where humanity only survives because the things out there are preoccupied with other things.

Should I make a Donald Trump comment out of that?

I've already read that sequence as Cthulhu waking up, seeing the stars weren't right, and hitting the snooze button on his cult-cum-alarm-clock.

But more broadly, Cthulhu isn't the big be all and all- it's entirely fitting to the Cthulhu cycle (as a distinct set of themes than the Dream Cycle, albeit with overlapping characters and settings) that there are things out there just as much bigger and worse than Cthulhu as Cthulhu is to human beings.

The apparent "Send him back" spell actually summons two other Old Ones AND gives Cthulhu a nice top hat (for no reason other than it's an interesting mental image)

I am surprised they didn't try a "Have you seen the yellow sign?"-based pun.
