thanekos: Yoshikage Kira as Kosaku Kawajiri, after the second arrow. (Default)

It was posthumously done, by his great-great-grandson.

It was narrated by that " playboy industrialist " of the same name and heard by the Watcher-stand-in of 2005's series of What If stories, a talented hacker who'd set up his computer to make multiversal TCP/IP connections.

(Presumably, he's either interning for AIM or been interned by ARMOR since.)

The latter'd found the former's work by looking to see if Daredevil was on Earth-717 as he was on 616.

He found that the Devil of Hell's Kitchen apparently wasn't- instead, the Devil Who Dares had definitely been.

(On the one hand, extradimensional downloads; on the other, extradimensional DMCAings. Temptation and threat, on the left and the right.)

The Owl made to force the Old Devil's hand, first with his birds and second with a " radiant stone from the belly of the fire mountain " slung into Masahiro's eyes.

The Old Devil slashed through the owls and stabbed through the Owl's eye.

Dying, the Owl let the Devil know that the only way to save his son's sight was to do what the shogun asked of him.

So the Old Devil made his way to the Hidden Palace, where the shogun instructed him to board a foreign vessel that would be docking in Edo, kill its crew, take its guns, and deliver them to his men.

The Devil agreed to do so, after securing a promise from his old friend Stick to ensure his son's safety no matter what happened.

So it was that, in the dead of night, the Old Devil snuck onto the U.S.S. Everett with the aid of the Greek ambassador who'd taken passage on it to America from Hong Kong with his family.

The latter rowed to shore with his own on the former's boat, leaving that Devil to kill his way through the ship's crew to its guns.

Matt Murdock, the cabin boy, and his friend Foggy were the only ones still alive.

They went to carry out their captain's final orders:

The Devil went back to the shogun, who was meeting with the Greek ambassador, who'd done what he'd done both to " [blunt] the ambitions of [those] rash and ignorant Americans " and for a golden reward.

The shogun, angered at not having his guns, found some solace in killing the ambassador and having Stick have his men kill the ambassador's wife and the Old Devil (whom he'd informed of the nonexistence of any cure for his son's blindness).

He then left the ambassador's orphaned daughter with the geishas, figuring that she " might be interesting " in a few years.

Stick, meanwhile, honored his promise and started training the Devil's son to " [cope] with his blindness. "

The boy took to it well, having gained a sense of the world like " a constant echo, bouncing in all directions " in lieu of his sight.

He grew to adulthood and took on the face of the Devil Who Dares, with which he could use his talents to " break the shogun's grip on the Emperor. "

He also took on the face of a courtier, a blind servant to the Emperor's concubines.

Under that mask, he perceived a fascinating " acoustic resonance "- that of the murdered ambassador's daughter, Elektra.

He met her again when he confronted ninjas of the shogun's Hand; she slung a sai at them and then him, saying that though she'd been trained by said Hand (from whom she'd since broken), she'd only seen reflexes like his once before.

" Is the fabled Devil Who Dares but a lowly courtier feigning blindness? "

" I feign nothing. "

(Alternate universe superhero stories always want to get to the familiar beats.)

So it was that the Devil Who Dared and Elektra mounted an attack on the shogun.

That giant left his puppet Emperor and expendable protectors behind for the hills.

(Yes, that's Matt.)

(I like to think an explicit homage to the Bullseye Elektra-kill was planned here at one point- it'd look a little awkward at long range, and you'd definitely have to flip it from right to left, but it would be interesting.

Speaking of, I think you can now guess what Matt's other name is on this world.)

(Here, Matt Murdock's recognized by the sharpness of his sight, instead of his lack of.

I also like to think this and 1602's Matt've crossed paths in that one Room on Battleworld.)

(This must've made a heck of a James Clavell novel on 717.

Oh yes, pagecount- just under 7 and a half of 23.)

He was researching the history through the other world's internet the story is just presented so readers can understand. It was just the framing gimmick for that series of what ifs instead of the bald guy on the moon narrating it.

Well, you just search Stack Overflow and Serverfault for "multiversal download pre-computer" and follow the instructions.

Yep. I've always thought that it was a really cool conceit, unfortunately the production values on most of the others are kinda low, the Devil Who Dares issue is the only one that really looks good overall.
