But it didn't end up mattering because this wasn't the final universe because What Ifs take place on alternate universes... right?

I don't think we are supposed to think too hard about that. AFter all if 616 was still spawning alternate universes during the incursions it raises the question of how the final incursion could even happen without spawning alternates constantly.

Personally I'm waiting for the head trip next year when if they stick to the pattern we will get What if Secret Wars issues.

BATTLEWORLD MADE UP OF OTHER BATTLEWORLDS.
Each with its own omnipotent Doom, or Molecule Man, or Dr. Strange, or whoever else might have been the one to save the last remnants of reality.

And yeah, I guess the Hickmanvengers -would- have let Thanos join...

Because it was so supremely cataclysmic that there were no alternative timelines? No sequence of events, even those involving cosmic intervention at the level of the Living Tribunal was even remotely close to preventing the final incursion.

Which makes the eventual restoration of things a gigantic ass pull if we accept that as the actual explanation. Of course given my opinion of the entire hickman plot line I am pretty much expecting an ass pull that makes little more sense than the rest of his mess.

I feel like Thanos climbed the ranks to becoming the leader of the Avengers way too quickly. Sure, let him join the Avengers to continue Cap's legacy if you believe there might be honesty in that claim, but putting him in command right out of the gate?

I get that Marvel is hyping Thanos for his big spotlight in the Infinity War movie, but is anyone else getting a little tired of seeing him all over the place? I mean, yeah, get his name out there for the casual readers who might only be familiar with him via the movies. I get that. But any and all of these appearances pale in comparison to his one, big, great moment in Infinity Gauntlet. NOTHING will ever top that.

Meanwhile, there are so many great, classic Avengers villains that have been more or less shuffled off to the side in favour of Loki, Red Skull, and Thanos.

I agree! Infinity Gauntlet (and various related things) was a great, great storyline. Outside of that, I can't say that I have any interest in Thanos at all.

GIffen's Thanos mini (Maxi?) series was great. I love Thanos.

He is best when used sparingly however (like Galactus) and the avengers feel a bit beneath him, honestly.

This. I can see what people mind when it comes to objecting to the Inhumans push, but don't mind because the main book is genuinely enjoyable, but Thanos irks me in the same manner, and the incredibly piecemeal handling of him for the MCU isn't helping matters there. The character hasn't been genuinely interesting in the books for me since the Annihilation stuff, though, where he was given a pretty solid send-off.

I'd almost say it's a shame he didn't stay dead. But I entirely agree. The current thing at Marvel to some extent seems to be pushing the movie villains, and hard. I'd much rather see a female villain get a push, for a change, but even the Red Widow idea I seem to remember them announcing doesn't seem to have gotten a lot of traction.
