While I expect I'll always be disappointed by any Doctor Strange that isn't Christopher Bird's (yes, I do plan to continue mentioning him literally every time the character comes up) this does look pretty good.

It's always fun to see the Marvel U's miscellaneous magic users show up, and I hope this little community actually gets some exploration as the series goes on. I'm still not sold on the sort of action oriented look of the series, but I'm fine with it if it gives writers a handle on the character. And I really like that Strange's request for payment is that the family more or less pays things forward.

I am liking way more than I am disliking.

1) The supporting cast of others magic users to give lesser known a chance to shine.

2) Dr. Strange payment being karmatic

3) Dr. Strange being back to being a hound dog.

I was just thinking how much this seemed like Christopher Bird's ideas, or at least someone who skimmed them at some point. The Bar With No Doors is, admittedly, more magical than Herbert's, but has the same place-for-magic-folks-to-network feel.

I am fine with a Doctor Strange run that feels like Christopher Bird.

which run of issues were Bird's?

I'd say, but you'd have to slide over to another universe for those.

I miss the gray at the temples a little. And does he really use an axe, like on the cover? Still, doesn't suck.

If I remember correctly he did use an axe... once, against the random encounter just before arriving in the bar but it was literally only visible on one panel.

Yeah, I wound find it more fitting if he was middle-aged, but it earns a "doesn't suck".

I always get weirded out whenever Strange talks like a normal person.

Looks good, though.

I love this. Stephen Strange as written as something other than an overly verbose plot device? This is good. :3

Why did he leave out the window? He doesn't really fly or swing around on ropes or webs, so why?

There are a lot of artists whose work I liked when they first came out that seem to be drawing people into something that look less and less human the later in their career you go: Chris Bacholo, Art Adams, John Romita Jr... I don't get it because I'd think you'd get better at that thing over time. Bacholo was never into photorealism but it didn't used to be this bad.

Not every artist's goal is to make their art more life-like. Not every reader's hope is to see art that's life-like.

Granted. I don't need photorealistic in my comics, and none of the artists I mentioned drew photorealistic at their start either. I'm just saying that these artists' styles have drifted from something I liked to something I find less and less recognizable and desirable in the shapes used for human figures. It's their choice to make, but also mine to wonder why and say nope to it.

I'm relatively new to Marvel and I loved this! It was the favorite book this week. I'd never read Dr. Strange before and I thought it was a great introduction.

Never been a fan of Bacchalo's art, but I like how the story plays (and the fee for services rendered is a nice one)

Huh, I'm surprised Wiccan didn't get roped in, especially if Wanda's meeting up with the other mages/sorcerors too. Yeah he's young but then again, apparently he's the 'magical messiah'. I know he's busy in New Avengers, but he can teleport pretty quickly.

Maybe Bacchalo lost the potato he used as photo reference for Billy in that New Avengers issue he appeared in?

This is the obligatory part where I complain that it's not MGK's Doctor Strange.

And now that that's out of the way, this seems real neat, it's definitely on my metaphorical pull list.

Strange is a hard sell for me; more often than not, I enjoy seeing him in group books, and almost didn't click this.

Glad I did, though. I enjoyed what I saw here.

"Bake him a cake and buy him a goldfish" made me smile. Is that Strange's version of having the family pay it forward?
