Simply beautiful , and it makes sense it took so long to illustrate. Hundreds of diffrent styles blended here. Don't fully understand who ' glory ' is. But alas i digress. Thanks for the post.

The series was definitely worth the wait between issues. Outstanding art, and the twist with Desire was clever.

Glory is the incarnate representative of the realm of Faerie, in much the way that the stars can also be people. He showed up before in a supplemental story about how Dream took his first girlfriend along to the conference at the beginning of everything, and Desire got her more interested in her own home star, Sta-Oa, than in Dream.

Or he may just strongly resemble the guy who was the incarnate representative of Faerie, I could be wrong there.

Just saw this. Thank you, what was that story printed in?

I'm pretty sure it's one of the stories in Endless Nights. I may be misremembering the resemblance, though, it's been a few years since I read that one.

So, who was the cat? And who is Glory, and the First Circle?

The cat was Desire in disguise, hence the cat ears & tail in the last page. Glory of the First Circle showed up in a previous issue where he told Dream the plot, and Dream also called him "Shekinah", but I don't think we know anything more.

I'm even pretty sure we've seen Desire in a cat outfit before in the original Sandman run.

Desire was wearing the cat outfit in A Doll's House when Dream confronts it about tricking him into almost killing a family member

I loved that cat suit. I cannot believe that, over a decade later, it became an actual major plot point.

It was beautifully done.

I'm still left wondering, though, exactly how Desire managed to take a ship encompassing part of Dream's realm and moved it across/out of reality in a way that defied Destiny's perceptions and Book. I can see one of Dream's other selves being able to do that since his purview is the imagination and things that are True despite never having happened, but it doesn't seem to line up with what Desire should be capable of.

Maybe Desire really, really wanted it badly.

From what I understand, two things that were mentioned in the series could explain this:

1) The power of want. Seeing as the power of want saved all the universes in the end, maybe Desire fed off want. And Dream, throughout the story, clearly did not want to be alone, wanted somebody to be with him, even if he didn't trust anybody other than "himself" to walk by him on a mission. It's likely also why he agreed to take Hope along, because it's subtly shown in Overture that Dream didn't want to be alone.

2) Desire as Dream of the Cats said it and Dream were different aspects of the same whole, "We are the same entity, viewed from different standpoints." Not so weird when you think it's Dream of the Cats, but when Desire says this, along with the fact that Dream's mom said "you and Desire are too alike", it might stand to reason that the two siblings are so close in nature that Dream (all of his aspects) would not have noticed, even though most of the powerful beings around him did.

Plus like Desire had the Spaeculum, which belonged to their father, who is more powerful than even Destiny, so maybe that's why it was able to move in and out without being noticed by its siblings.

It's good to see comics doing all they CAN do...being all they can be. Where both art and storytelling intertwine together and complement each other.

SANDMAN remains a high water mark of comic storytelling.
