So either Martha was sitting out there with Jonathan for hours screaming Clark's name, or he can somehow hear faster than sound?

I'm sure it's been discussed more than a few times, but there's really no good actual answer because the physics behind it doesn't work.

The easy explanation is Superman.

The more complicated one is Superman's range of hearing is global, so the sound waves doesn't need to travel all the way to him. I'm not even sure if that's accurate or possible because I'm not a physicist.

That's why the answers for his powers usually just end up being Superman, because it doesn't make sense, and trying to create an explanation usually causes more problems.

It's also why that I personally hated MoS' flight. So he generates a flight/anti-grav field? Ookay...

Yeah, his ears must actually be long-ranged molecular vibration detectors or some such.

What I find odd is that none of the noises in the 2000+ miles between him and Martha can mask her screams from him...except for the rumbling happening right next to him. I mean, I get that it's loud rumbling, it just seems like it wouldn't trump a continent's worth of background noise.

That, and the fact that Clark's apparently arrived within, like, a minute of Jonathan keeling over and he's already standing there grieving. People can be resuscitated from heart attacks, Clark! Cool down Jonathan's body with freeze breath and fly him to the top hospital in Metropolis!

I preferred the All-Star version, where the Chronovore actually stole a three-minute chunk of Clark's life, so there was no possible way he could notice when Jonathan had his heart attack. Still doesn't make sense that he didn't try resuscitation, though. Unless Jonathan has a really strict DNR order. Maybe he's Seventh-Day Adventist?

As much as this Superman is infinitely preferable to the one we got for the New52, I hate that Johns was so glued to Donner's approach at times. There's zero need to kill of Pa Kent beyond a ham-fisted 'gain one thing, lose another' routine.

Dramatic scenes mildly undermined by Gary Frank's apparent difficulty with drawing eyes facing the same way on a consistent basis.
How is it that this comic was made with no-one ever taking a look at all the times throughout where characters have eyes going in different directions and thinking "wait a minute... this could stand to be touched up"?

I have never seen this comic before, and Clark racing like the devil to get back to Pa Kent really hit me in the feels. He looks like a little boy all of a sudden, which I think was the intention. His eyes, at least in that scene, were fantastic.

That cover looks like Clark's thinking, "I don't WANNA Superman today...Oh fine, just once..."
