Harley's uncle died. He'd moved to Los Angeles after the death of Harley's aunt, but wanted his ashes to be returned to Long Island to be buried next to his wife. Harley is making the trip to pick them up, but Big Tony suggested she not do it alone, so she called Ivy and Selena.

They arrive in L.A. and spend the night in a nice hotel (Selena picked it because of something she wants to do while she's in town involving one of the other guests there).

Naturally, they get into misadventures. They also do a lot of sightseeing, and meet some unusual and interesting people along the way.

They make it to Long Island.

You know, Bruce, sometimes it's okay to just let this stuff go.

That's not subtext. That's not even text. That's front page double-size headers.

Why in Gods name are comics treating Harley like some bubbly antihero now, who we should all root for? She was help The Joker, a mass-murderer, a child killer. I don't get it. You can't just expect the reader to be okay with that.

And, yeah. If we can all just stop with that tired old "two guys are together and everyone thinks they're gay" trope, that'd be great. Gay people aren't a damn punchline.

I kind of have a problem with Deadpool, yeah. Mostly because he inhabits a universe where, like our own, death has consequences.
How can we be upset at his self-image issues when he's literally killing people for money? I don't think you can play violence off as tragic, as with the death of Gewn Stacy, and then play it off as funny and slapstick, as with Deadpool. Either it has meaning or no meaning, you know?

And with Harley, all I can see is someone who aided a mass murderer and child killer, and someone who audiences are encouraged not to hold to account for their sins.

Wolverine is a good example of how to do the subject right. Is he an awesome character? Yeah. But he's also a deeply damaged, haunted man, who lives every day struggling with himself, and fostering the greatest shame and guilt for the lives he's taken and the wars he fought in. He was actually made to work for his redemption, it wasn't handed to him.

Honestly, though. If Harley was, let's say, nothing more than a petty thief who had never been with The Joker and helped him, I wouldn't have this problem. But that's not who she was, and her character needs to be held to account.

Terribly sorry!
I did not know about Flashpoint, so I was not aware of what changes have been made to Harley. If, as you say, her origin is really changed, and she was no longer his accomplice - but a victim who reclaimed her life, then I am completely blowing this whole thing out of proportion, and not giving the character a fair shake.
My apologies :)

And, in regards to tone, you're right. Sometimes different shifts in mood are a good thing! But I think, in general, I take a dim view of too much bloodshed, and of making killing seem fun. I have always felt that comics should maintain a kind of universal appeal, so both young folk and older can read them and enjoy them. And characters like Deadpool, or overtly heroic interpretations of a monster like The Punisher, seem inappropriate to me. But I understand I am probably in the minority on this!

From what I've seen, it looks like she was his accomplice for a short time, but now looks on him as one might an abusive ex.

I'm... actually not sure if I'd agree with that last part. Her first couple appearances on BTAS were "Joker's Favor" and "The Laughing Fish", which are still regarded as two of *the* darkest stories the show ever did (I know of at least one guy who thought "The Laughing Fish" belonged to a whole new Batman show designed especially for primetime). After that came "Almost Got 'im", and TBH her interactions with Selina in that one *still* make my skin crawl.

Dini admittedly lightened the character up after that... until Return of the Joker showed up, anyways.

I thought B:TAS was originally intended for prime time.

I love how they put a lot of thought into Harley's lines on the graveyard scene. It totally helps smooth out any possible 'road trip for the sake of humor-mining' objections by putting actual thought into constructing what happens when Harley finally ends her journey. Nice read, as always!

I love that the Chicago scene is set on top of the John Hancock Tower.
