The theme of the progression of these avatars seems to be the gradual acceptance and embrace by white culture of what began as a Black artform, so possibly not. Or possibly she's biracial and passes for white.

I am going with "biracial and passes for white" because that sounds less unfortunate than describing the complex relationship of white culture and black culture as "gradual acceptance and embrace"
