We don't see enough Silver Age Marvel around here, I think.

In which Magneto picks the wrong fight...

Magneto has figured out that the X-Men must be based in the New York City area, so he has a mission for the Brotherhood.

What a team. Meanwhile, from his sub, Magneto launches his own attack on New York.

The X-Men, he knows, will come to defend Manhattan, and fall into his trap. After all, it's not as though there's anybody else with super powers in New York City that could cause him trouble...

That was one of the most fun parts of the shared Marvel Universe in the old days. With everyone based in New York, anyone could show up in the book. This was frustrating for the villains. They'd be looking for revenge against their usual heroic foe, only to get someone else.

Thor is able to track the waves to their source.

This being when not being in contact with the hammer for a period turned Thor back into Don Blake (which Magneto doesn't see), the Master of Magnetism gets a little time to recover and check on the Brotherhood. The X-Men have turned up, and are kicking the Brotherhood's asses. Meanwhile, Dr. Blake has recovered the hammer.

Magneto uses his usual method to escape, leaving a bomb that will destroy a city that the hero must take care of. Very soon after this, two of the Brotherhood will quit and join Thor's team, the Avengers. The public will be concerned about these former members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but will be reassured when those trusted heroes, the X-Men, vouch for Wanda and Pietro.

No, really, that's what happened. The X-Men used to be viewed as heroes just like the FF and Avengers, only born with their powers.

That's why I find it annoying when Marvel portrays, in stories set in the old days, the public's hostile attitude towards the X-Men as how it has always been. Um, Marvel, some of us have read the old comics.

When did the X-Men vouch for them?

Eh, even in Stan's original comics humans were hostile towards mutants.

Like the time the X-Men had to rescue Toad from an angry mob.

Or the stuff with Trask and the sentinels.

In addition to the scene with Toad being attacked by the mob, Stan also had Magneto rescuing Wanda and Pietro from a mob, and Beast and Iceman having to flee from a mob as well.

The origins of Iceman and Cyclops later on in the 60s also had them being attacked by mobs because of their powers.

It was more than just a "Villain turns public against the superheroes, but things go back to normal at the end" situation; humans were portrayed as hating and fearing mutants back in the old comics too.

Aren't those more examples of people fearing weird looking guys and witches (in the case of Wanda and Pietro)? Even Nightcrawler was not reviled until people thought he was behind the murders his step-brother had committed.

The stuff about the murders was added in later, in Kurt's first appearance it was just a mob.

And mutants were specifically mentioned by the mob Beast and Iceman were fleeing.

In MARVELS #2. a bystander commented that Bolivar Trask looked like Basil Karloff. Agree/Disagree?

Magneto trying to bargin with Thor via a drink and riches just makes me giggle. IDK if its the dialogue or what...

Love Wanda's irritation at Toad and Mastermind haha.

And its good to see he does not treat Jane the same way that Reed treated Sue.

Ah yes, the infamous Silver Age moment where Magneto diverts/deflects Mjolnir. The only place outside of the Ultimate universe where fans have any evidence to answer the age old question, "could the Master of Magnetism lift the Hammer?"
