kamino_neko: Tedd from El Goonish Shive. Drawn by Dan Shive, coloured by Kamino Neko. (Default)

People who know me and the series can probably guess which sequence I'm posting from.

OK, this sequence is from the arc Squirrel Prophet...the characters are involved in a card tournament, but that's not the important part, just explaining what is happening...

(FTR, Sam is trans, which Grace knows. That's why he made the assumption about Tedd, and why Grace hesitates in that one panel.)

And why this sequence is important to me...

Tedd is the first genderfluid character I've encountered in fiction. Others have since appeared in other comics I read, but Tedd is the first.

And...The sequence is basically a compressed version of about 2 decades of my life though I've known about transgender since I was little.

That 'there's a name for it' moment...it's important. That there's a word means there are other people who are the same way. It wasn't just me. I wasn't a weirdo who was having feelings nobody else did.

All the 'be true to yourself' in the world doesn't carry as much weight as 'you are not alone'.

This was good, if for no other reason than " transformation.. appeal narrative actually articulating gender in a not-uncomfortably determinative way. "

(Oh, transformation narratives- sometimes that tendency to determinativeness seems like a way to articulate those feelings about gender due to a lack of comfort with the commonly understood ways to do that, and sometimes it feel like a blithe way of justifying.. appeal.. crud.)

I get what you're saying. All too many gender-transformation webcomics, manga, anime and the like play it entirely for porn fantasies. El Goonish Shive, while it does have its share of fanservice, always keeps it tasteful and, as we see in these scans, does ultimately treat genderfluidity with the respect it deserves. It helps that the cartoonist, Dan Shive, self-identifies as genderfluid.

Real talk, I didn't even know Genderfluid was even a thing until I saw it in EGS, that's how underrepresented they are.

The only other Genderfluid character I can think of off hand is Reiko, Pathfinder's Iconic Ninja (who is confirmed by creators to be both Genderfluid (although she presents as female to people she doesn't trust) and Asexual.)

Yes. Pathfinder has a set of what they call iconics- characters who represent the various classes. They're the build of that class you can play at Pathfinder Society events if you didn't build your own character, and they pop up as illustrative examples in the rulebooks.

Paizo, the company that publishes Pathfinder, has made an ongoing effort for the primary Pathfinder setting, Golarion, to be inclusive, which is nice.

Yeah, recently Pathfinder also unveiled Shadra, the Iconic Shaman, who is a Trans woman.

And Shadra isn't even the first trans character to show up in Pathfinder: Several have appeared in adventure paths prior to this.

Quite. Characters show up in their adventure paths too- In Wrath of the Righteous, one of the major NPCs you're expected to ally with is a MtF thief, but her wife (a half-orc paladin) sold the family magic sword for some transition magic and they've lived happily together ever since.

Well, happy except for the demon invasion, but that's unrelated.

If I have one complaint, I can't recall any FtM characters. But there's transsexual characters, genderfluid characters, intersex-identifies-as-female, identifies-as-both (though I think that one mostly in gods and similar), bisexual, lesbian, gay male. And considering that range, I simply may not have the products with FtM characters.

I met a guy who was genderfluid in Uni, which is how I myself was introduced to the term. I feel like I should get back in touch with them one of these days, maybe quiz them for a bit so that I can write a story featuring a gender-fluid character.

It took me a long time to disconnect the notions of genderfluid with the gender-role-transgressive.performers like Boy George and Annie Lennox I had growing up, and that it was more than a cross dressing.style choice.

There's also Porcelain, from the recent Secret Six series. Because Gail Simone is awesome.

Oh man, I mentioned El Goonish Shive (plus a bunch of the other transformation comics) in my trans comics talk a couple days ago. The transform comics have a weird niche within that whole scope that I wanted to talk about.

I still haven't really seen gender dealt with in my way (it's a combo of being trans and severe mental illness that pretty severely limits your ability to get trans medical care--after all, you're too crazy to be trusted with your own health!) and have been making comics and zines to try and talk about it. It's so frustrating not to have a reflection!
