One of my favourite scenes from Grant Morrison's run, offered as a possible source of general inspiration.

7 pages from Animal Man vol. 1 #23 (May 1990).

Buddy Baker is in despair. Feeling empty inside after his brutal revenge upon those responsible for the murder of his wife and children, he borrows a time machine so he can go back and warn his family in advance. However, the machine malfunctions, transmitting him as a sort of ghost whom his family, and even his past self, can't hear and can only intermittently see. As if this weren't horrible enough, Animal Man involuntarily falls even further back through time, to 1968. After giving his ten-year-old self a scare, he sits brooding in a park, whereupon the Phantom Stranger, who can see and hear him, offers his company.

And so Animal Man returns to the present, just in time to help deal with a bevy of pre-Crisis alternate-Earth superheroes and villains who've just re-emerged from Psycho Pirate's brain. But that's another story.
