I thought this series was canceled given how Marvel realized the concept was hopeless. They work best divided.

I really like this book.

Well at least the parts of it where Avengers fight X-men villains and vice versa.

Is there a reason that the world's leading ACTUAL FREAKING NAZI having stolen the brain of THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL TELEPATH isn't actually the focus for every single superhero team in the MU? Because you sort of think that that would be a very big deal indeed...

Captain America, Steve Rogers, called dibs. And real heroes respect dibs

It's an X-Men problem they don't like to share.

Because the Red Skull is an incompetent Nazi, a terrible villain and boring. You know Doom and Fisk laugh about him behind his back.

Seriously, how many times has he held a device capable of bringing his greatest dreams to life, only to screw it up through utter and complete stupidity? He's lucky that Captain America has so few decent villains that they have to keep bringing him back like a bad penny.

Name just one great Red Skull story. Just one. I'm betting you can't.

I thought both the original "death" of the Red Skull, and the mechanism of his subsequent return under Gruenwald (culminating with the showdown between John Walker and Steve Rogers in Captain America #350) was pretty great, when it's revealed that the Skull's basically been behind everything that's gone wrong for Steve (and John) for the last few years.

And while it's a one-off, Magneto vs. the Skull during "Acts of Vengeance" will never not be great.

And Brubaker's first run (starting with the original Winter Soldier arc) did a fine job of using the Skull as the one pulling strings behind the scenes.

Red Skull stories

Yep, those are the ones that came to mind for me as well. (Admittedly the only ones..)
I especially loved Gruenwalds take, and wish that the Red Skull still had that cloned Steve body. It's was good to have his arch villain match Steve physically, if not in fighting skills. The only thing I would have changed with the end of The Captain America No More storyline is that I would have kept the Red Skull with Steve's face for a while. That could have opened up a whole lot of potential stories. And he could have always just put his old mask on when he felt like it.

I actually liked the basic idea of this Red Skull taking Xavier's brain. As to give someone as evil as the Skull that power is terrifying. It just hasn't quite lived up to its potential in the subsequent storylines unfortunately. Probably because most of the writing directions at Marvel just now is baffingly awful. I expect the writers are having a lot of interference from the top..

You know, that is a VERY good question.

I mean they had a very good setup there: Red Skull with Xavier's brain, a whole team of interesting bad guys with unique powers and gimmicks (Including a Turtle Man God who can hang with Thor and a guy whose basically the Marvel Equivalent of Glorious Godfrey), it seemed like a perfect foil for the Avengers/X-men crossover comic. But what went wrong?

I mean that just pissed me off so hard. We had this awesome concept for a villain and team, and then we drop it for this endless bullshit.

And you should know I was late to the party on this, I started reading this on Marvel digital, so after that first arc with the S men when we started with the Twins storyline I was like "Okay, how long is this gonna be before we go back to the Red Skull thing? Nope... Not yet... OH COME ON I DO NOT CARE ABOUT THESE TWINS GIVE ME THE RED SKULL AND HIS CRONIES."

I seriously haven' been this pissed at Marvel since after M-Day when they literally put all the depowered mutants on a bus, AND THEN LITERALLY BLEW UP THE BUS.

You really would.

And while I think it's been an interesting status quo for the Skull, this has gone on for way too long.

And given that the Skull is a Cap villain, it's unlikely to ever be resolved here anyway.

When the book started, it was their primary focus between other emergencies, because Old Steve was running the team and it was, at the time, the only real super-team that was still in operation post-Secret Wars time skip. (The FF's gone, the X-Men were effectively disbanded and didn't have their act together at all, the other Avengers squad(s) hadn't formed up yet, Roberto was technically a super-villain...)

Now, they've as much as said that Evil Steve is running interference for the Skull (including revoking this group's official charter and attempting to disband it), primarily because Evil Steve wants to take the Skull out himself in order to seize and remake the modern HYDRA. The Skull is also doing a very good job of staying underneath almost everyone's radar, because he's an omega-class telepath who wants to stay hidden and he hasn't done anything. It would be reasonably easy to fan-wank this by figuring the Skull is deliberately stirring things up to keep everyone but the "Unity Squad" off his trail, because he, for reasons unknown, wants to recruit and brainwash Rogue.

What's especially weird is that he effectively did brainwash and recruit Rogue in the early arcs, when his focus was on the Scarlet Witch. So it's strange that he suddenly struggles with it now...

Possibly the Nazi with the brain of the world's most powerful telepath making everyone who knows about it fail to get overly concerned or mention it to anyone with effective defenses against that level of telepathy?

"Charles had cards to play when he needed them most. He sent a handful of barely trained teenagers to their death, then made everyone who'd ever known them forget they ever existed" just isn't as inspiring.

God, how I hate that retcon. It takes Xavier into supervillian territory and undoes so much of his development for little actual benefit. But thankfully it gave us...uhh, Vulcan. Hmmm. Yeah, I got nothing.

Wait, was Magneto actually Rogue's boyfriend? I remember some mutual attraction when she was depowered / in the Savage Land, but I thought that was never consummated.

I'm referring to 616 continuity, obviously. AoA doesn't count.

X-Men Legacy picked up on it then when the two teams split Magneto and Rogue broke up on good terms and respected the other's choice.
