Y'know, I wouldn't have thought ill of Peter and MJ's parenting skills before, but... not letting Anna have shoes that light up...
Now I don't even know what to think.

There must be an explanation for that!

I vote "they were trying to encourage her to make her own shoes that light up, thus upholding awesome footwear and creativity." After all, Peter made his own webshooters when he was her age!

I think it's grade-a parenting. Those light-up shoes are annoying as heck.

It feels so nice to read a book I know is not going to get dragged into event crap.

Hell, this universe apparently never had Civil War I, let alone its sequel.

"Jonah gave me a chance when no one else would."

I think there was a made-for-TV Frank Sinatra movie that had a line like that.
"Frank, these people are *criminals*."
"These people gave me a job when no one else would."

Also, that's a little better than "Jonah is a greedy jerk who deserves to get ripped off" that the original Lee/Ditko stories had.

I would say it's MUCH better :). With the right writing, Jonah is a very interesting and compelling character. It's a waste to make him 100% a jerk.

Even in the old movies, one of the best scenes was the part where he refuses to throw Peter under the bus even while the villain is threatening to murder him if he doesn't give the photographer up.

Yeah, JK Simmons as Jonah is one of the things I wish they'd have carried across, regardless of series.

My favourite bit was in Spider-Man 2, with him lamenting Spider-Man's absence and just about ready to brand him a hero, before promptly lapsing back into yelling about him being a thief and a menace all over again.

In the 2002 movie. I tried looking for the scene in English but couldn't find it anywhere... this is the scene in Italian.

Norman is demanding that Jonah reveals the identity of the person who has been taking pictures of Spiderman because he intends to get to Spidey through the photographer. Jonah keeps lying and saying he has no idea who that person is, that he gets the pictures anonymously by mail.

Because apparently writers of super-hero comics have trouble writing people without powers interacting with people with powers.

That or this is the concession they had to make to editorial to have a comic where Peter and MJ are married and have a kid. Who knows?

I mean, on my part, I can't say I hate it, but it does seem like a lazy way to involve MJ in the superpowered stuff.

Maybe it felt weird leaving her out? Or because, if I'm not mistaken, they did sort of leave her out (in that specific regard, mind) in Spider-Girl and wanted to do something different?

Well, if he's getting $1,000 every time Spider-Man goes into action, and Spider-Man goes out seemingly every day in the comics, he'd be doing pretty well.

The "true" Peter Parker, ladies and gentlemen! He works for the Bugle, not because he doesn't have any other choice, considering his super hero activity, but because science is boring.

Definitely, and if it gave too much trouble with him having to be in school on time every day, they could have made him a surrogate teacher, running from one school in the district to another, with no regular working hours.

Even taking to account MJ as occasional super-hero... this is proof married and parenting Peter and MJ can be done well.

I'm loving this. Enough that I think I may look into picking up the book, which is something I haven't done with Marvel in a long time.

Shame they didn't do this with regular Spider-Man.

And yeah, it has its... foibles, let's say, but I can look past that stuff for the character dynamics it has going on.
