The Red Skull thinking about America and what he could really do with the place is a great bit.

As is the shield through the window.

I think that False Flag ops as a pretext for war strike a cord because they've been done before and caused great damage. The earliest example I've found is the Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790) where King Gustav III attacked his own people to get permission to start a ware against Russia. I'm certain it's been used well before that, it's just the earliest CONFIRMED usage I could find.

There's something truly frightening about attacking your own people to start a war.
I think that's why the antagonists in The Princess Bride disgusted me so much, marrying a woman only to kill and start a war is the lowest of the low.

you know, if Red Skull had actually had the scientists develop a cure for AIDS, or some other life threatening illness, he would be greeted with open arms and wouldn't have to take power by force.
